Move Data Between Hosting and Your Local Drive Without Using The Files Folder!

Published
We’re excited to announce we have completed our project to roll out local disk mapping to all customers in the Boston, Orange County, and Vancouver data centers!  For a quick review, including demos for both PCs and Macs, take a look at this Knowledgebase solution. Below we will review the most common uses for this functionality.

Exporting:

Whether exporting from the Export module, or exporting Query results or even exporting a Report, you can now save to your local drive, as shown in the following short video examples.

Use Export

Export from Query Results

Export a Report

See How to export directly from Blackbaud Hosting Services for more information.

Importing:

Access to your local drive has also been made available when importing, to allow you to bypass the Files folder. When browsing for the file to be imported, you can access your local C drive (shows as C$) and navigate to the folder where the import file is located to select it. Here is a short video of the option in Import .

You may also wish to review How to import when Blackbaud hosts your data for more information.

Change the file path:

Should you find that when exporting or importing, the path does not default to the desired local drive then you can use the drop down list on the Look In box (or Save in box when exporting) to navigate to the appropriate drive.

For more information, see this short video on how to change the file path.

Media:

As with import, the option to select from your local drives is available when adding media to constituents.  Please note that we still recommend that the media is EMBEDDED rather than linked.

See How to add Media for more information on adding, editing or deleting Media.

Additional Notes:

  • Users will still need to use the Files folder for some functions, such as Queues, Crystal Reports, and Media. For more steps for using the Files folder in these instances, see the previous blog post, Ways to Access the Files Folder in Blackbaud Hosting.
  • Network drives will not be accessible, only locally mounted drives.
  •  Although we have not seen or experienced this, there is a possibility for latency when running larger jobs, since the application will now need to communicate from the server across the internet directly to the local drive on the user’s machine.
