Important Notice on Backups Using Full SQL Server

Published
A problem has been identified with backups scheduled in the Blackbaud Management Console (BMC) when the database is attached to the Blackbaud Management Console using full SQL Server and The Raiser’s Edge version 7.93.

Note: This issue does not impact hosted customers.

As you know, when The Raiser’s Edge is initially installed a pre-configured instance of SQL Express can also be installed.  This instance is called RE_Express.

However, you have the option to use your own SQL Express or full SQL Server instance rather than RE_Express, if you so prefer.

If using full SQL Server instance rather than Blackbaud’s or your own SQL Express instance then please be aware that there is an issue where scheduled backups are not saving the frequency of the backup.

For example, if you have scheduled a backup in the Blackbaud Management Console to run daily then, once the backup completes successfully, the scheduled backup is actually then being saved with frequency Once.

This means that the backup will not run again, as schedule shows it should only run once.

How to check if this affects you?

First, check your The Raiser’s Edge version – in The Raiser’s Edge select Help at the top of the screen and About The Raiser’s Edge in the drop-down menu – this issue relates to The Raiser’s Edge version 7.93.5782.1 and higher

Next check in the Blackbaud Management Console for the SQL instance used by your Raiser’s Edge database. If the SQL instance name does not include “RE_Express” then you are using your own SQL instance and we suggest that you consult with your IT to confirm if this is a full SQL Server instance or your own “Express” instance. Here is what an RE_Express instance will look like.

If using your own full SQL Server instance, click on the backup option in Blackbaud Management Console (see above screenshot) to check if a scheduled backup has been setup. See how to create a backup schedule for more information on scheduling backups in the BMC.  If the backup is scheduled in the BMC, then please follow the steps in Backups scheduled in Blackbaud Management Console are not saving frequency for the steps to adjust the frequency in SQL Server Management Studio.
