bbcon 2014 Guest Blog: Query, Exports, Reports, Oh My!

Do you feel like Dorothy at the entrance to the enchanted forest when you try to retrieve information from The Raiser’s Edge?
“Query, Export, Reports! Oh, my! Which way do I go??” I encounter a great deal of confusion from clients about where to go, when to do it and to do what the database.
Many times, they become so exasperated, they simply revert to more manual means instead of harnessing the powerful tools that The Raiser’s Edge offers. My heart weeps when I hear, “Oh, we can’t use Mail/Reports in The Raiser’s Edge, Miss Sandy. We do everything in Excel.” Much like Dorothy’s fear of the unknown, often the confusion and intimidation can be dispelled with a little more information and an increased understanding of the role that each tool is designed to play.
In my upcoming session at bbcon 2014, we will pull back the curtain on the wizardry of data retrieval (I hate the word “extraction”; it reminds me too much of the dentist). We’ll take a look at the features of each function like Query, Reports, and Mail-what each can do alone. More importantly, we’ll look at how they can be used together to help you get where you want to go.
Like Dorothy, Scarecrow, and the Tin Man, we’ll lock arms and fearlessly face our challenges together….maybe even sing a song and make a new friend along the way.
