Year-End Cover Letters and Donor Statements

Published
January is possibly one of the busiest months in your office. Not because of some big event, donation push, or holiday. It’s because this is the month many of you create and send out donor statements. You are not required by law to send a statement of donations; however, most of us find that our donors request these statements and depend on them for tax purposes.

Donor statements typically include all the gifts a donor has made from the previous year. But it’s also a chance for you to share with your donors the impact of their donation. It’s a great opportunity for donors to hear an important story of how their gift made a difference, and to get excited about the upcoming year and what they can do to help your organization. The cover letter that goes along with the donor statement can make or break your donor retention for the upcoming year—so you want to get it right and make a big impact on your donors.
