Avoid Dead Ends with Redirects

Published
Frequently it may be necessary to change the structure of your Blackbaud NetCommunity website as your design evolves to best suit your constituents’ needs – sometimes this means consolidating or replacing existing pages.  Occasionally, these orphaned pages may confuse users who navigate to them directly by means of a search engine, or through a hypertext link on an old newsletter. If you wish to ensure these old pages point to the latest content on your website, without deleting or redundantly updating them, URL Redirects are the perfect solution for you.

Creating a URL Redirect could not be simpler:

  1. Log into Blackbaud NetCommunity with a user who has Supervisor Rights.Administration section drop-down menu
  2. Click the Administration section drop-down on the Blackbaud NetCommunity control bar and select URL redirects.
Note: You will be presented with a list of all URL Redirects currently configured for your website.
  3. You can edit existing URL Redirects by clicking the edit ‘Pencil’ icon. To create a new URL Redirect, click the New redirect button. New redirect button
  4. You will be presented with two fields, one for the original page (in other words, the old page you no longer wish to use) and the other is for the target page (where users will be redirected to if they navigate to the original page).
Redirect screenYou can either search for a local Blackbaud NetCommunity page for the target, or specify an External site URL. This is useful if you need a Blackbaud NetCommunity page to divert to a separate website as your requirements change.
  5. Once you have defined the Original and Target pages, simply click the ‘Save’ button at the bottom of the screen, and you’re done!
