Nonprofit project management is as much art as it is science. It requires keen organizational skills as well as strong soft skills to communicate with a variety of stakeholders. If you are identifying someone on your team to take on the role of project manager, or are hiring a contingent role, they don’t need to be a subject expert. Look for someone who asks good questions, communicates proactively, and understands the risks and consequences of their decisions. You want someone who can be a trusted servant leader and who will model courageous behavior.
