Now's The Time: Prepare To Get The Most Of #GivingTuesday!

Published

The Tuesday after the American Thanksgiving holiday — #GivingTuesday — has come to indicate the start of the holiday giving season, as donors flood the internet in search of opportunities to give. If you haven't yet formed your strategy for these potential gifts and givers, now's the time! As you prepare, consider these tips to get the most of #GivingTuesday.

7b08ff5c66f3ad630a4dac794c29fabf-huge-20Test and plan. Craft content — email and social media posts — to help remind donors to look for you on #GivingTuesday. Be sure to include a link to your donation page, and share this content in the days leading up to the big day — the week of Thanksgiving (but before everyone takes off for family or a day at the dining table) and the Monday after (when everyone's already online grabbing CyberMonday deals), particularly. To minimize the risk that something goes wrong, test everything from your donation page to how your content appears on different browsers and devices.

Give a reason to give.  Like with any appeal, donors are more likely to give when they know what they're giving toward and the impact their gifts will make. #GivingTuesday is no different, so use the day to promote a specific project that speaks to the heart of your mission. To further entice donors (and help get the most of the day), explore matching grants or major donors willing to match the gifts you receive on #GivingTuesday. Set realistic goals, and post regular updates to keep donors informed and help create a sense of urgency as the day goes on.

Make a personal connection. #GivingTuesday is a great time to promote your mission, but keep in mind everyone else is doing the same on that day. To help stand out from the crowd, show donors the impact of their support through real-world testimonials from other donors or about those who benefit from your mission. As you craft content, use images to quickly inspire donors and convey the impact of your organization without a wall of text.

Turn it into #GivingEveryday. Just as you prepare for #GivingTuesday itself, plan for the days and months that follow. Engage and thank the new donors who discover your organization on #GivingTuesday with prompt acknowlegments that speak to your overall mission. Analyze the success and response rate of your #GivingTuesday content to see what resonated — and what, well, didn't — to help guide your appeal strategy throughout the new year.
