Take Advantage of Your Resources: Guest Post from Emily Everett

Published

When I started my current job in 2010, I had no idea what I was getting into. Don’t get me wrong, I loved my job then and I'm even more invested now, but when you take on a role as the sole employee, it all becomes very clear; you’re going to need some help.

Let’s see - there are volunteers, budgets, events, community relations, and much more to manage. With a little help from your resources, it’s all possible.

Living in Charleston, SC, one thing is clear, this town loves a good cause! I find many resources from volunteer management e-newsletters, event planning brainstorming sessions, and social media workshops - most of which are free. Even the smallest of communities have a handful of organizations that could use resources you probably take for granted, and vice versa. And in addition to your local help, you have the Altru community and Skype chats to help you connect with fellow nonprofits.

Enjoying this blog? Well, I've learned a lot from those, too. I encourage you to find relevant blogs and add them to a reader. You never know what topic might come up that affects your organization directly. Find time at least once a week to sit down, scroll, and educate. Here are a few of my favorites:

Make a continued commitment to developing your knowledge base. Your board, donors, volunteers, and community will thank you.
