Best Practices For Replacing With Required Purchase Discounts In Altru 4.91

Published
With the release of Altru 4.91, there are some changes to With Required Purchase type discounts to enhance performance in Altru.  If your organization uses these discounts, there are some alternative ways that you can still offer discounts to your patrons for programs.  As of the Altru 4.91 release, With Required Purchase discounts may only be applied manually or with a promotion code, only one With Required Purchase discount may be used per order, and this type of discount may only apply to 5 unique items per order manually.  You can read more about these changes here.

With these changes to With Required Purchase discounts, there are some alternatives you can use to offer these discounts.  Here are a few common scenarios for With Required Purchase discounts and how you can continue using them:
  1. Let’s say you have a buy one summer camp, and receive a 10% discount off the second summer camp.  In the past, it’s likely that parents automatically received this discount online when purchasing two summer camps.  In the same scenario now, use a Promo Code that ticket buyers can type in to receive the WRP Discount.  If this is for a specific targeted audience like past summer camp attendees, email the promo code to them. If this is a discount that is available to everyone, consider posting it directly on the web page too.  Read more about how to set up a promo code here if you are using this discount in Online Sales.
  2. In the gift shop, you offer a WRP discount where a customer receives a free postcard for purchasing 2 postcards and in the past this was an automatic discount.    If you used an Automatic WRP Discount in Daily or Advance Sales: Similar to online sales, consider using a Promo Code/Button or a manual discount button on the Daily Sales Page.  When staff use Promo Codes, it is helpful to create a cheat sheet of all the available, active Promo Codes (not just for WRP Discounts, but other Promo Codes you have promoted recently as well).   Read more about how to set up a promo code here.
  3. Here’s another common example.  Perhaps your members receive a discount for purchasing a ticket to all of the lectures in a series.  If you used an Automatic WRP Discount for Members: Use a Promo Code and distribute it to members for online sales or give your sales staff the Promo Code to use for offline sales.  With Required Purchase discounts can still be restricted to members using the Eligibility tab in Discount setup, so only active members can use it, which is the same as how other members discounts work.
  4. If your organization offers a wide variety of summer camps each year and gives a WRP discount for purchasing multiple camps, you may need to apply a WRP discount to more than 6 items in an order.  In this type of scenario, continue using manual or promo code WRP Discounts, but create multiple sales orders to break it up to less than 6 items receiving the discount per order.
  5. If you find the wrong discount is applying to your orders now that all WRP discounts are manual and you still offer other types of member discounts. Its possible to override the incorrect automatic discount, by choosing the correct discount from the available discounts.  When you choose the new discount, it overwrites the incorrect discount.
