Take A Leap Of Faith

Published
I’ve been listening to this same album now for about a month. When I find something I like musically, I tend to stick with it. Just ask my friends…they try to get me to like “new” music and I am admittedly stuck in the 80s listening to hair bands (and their recent releases…it’s new music!). Since we’re all friends here, I’ll admit I like long haired guys playing electric guitars.

I’m also the daughter of two classically trained musicians so I have an appreciation for other styles of music, and you will definitely catch me enjoying concerts performed by the local symphony orchestra. I recognize that if you don’t try other styles of something…in this case, music…you don’t learn more about the world around you.

What does all this have to do with Altru and Blackbaud University? I’d like to introduce a new style of training coming soon to the Altru curriculum. Those of you who have consumed our virtual courses know we offer three-hour classes that allow you to learn about Altru while learning how the tools in the software can help you achieve outcomes. We provide case studies that hopefully ring true to scenarios you encounter during your daily use of Altru. These courses allow you to take time in our sample environment and safely play around, with no repercussions in your live data. It’s a standard type of training.

Another type of course that is new to the Learn More training subscription is a Solution Workshop. In our Solution Workshops, we tackle topics that Altru can help you manage. The exercises in the workshop courses are theory and discussion based rather than point-and-click in nature. In fact, you won’t have any activities that require use of a sample data set.

You might be asking yourself, “How is this going to help me if I don’t get walked through a set of exercises in Altru?” This is the rub – how often do get to experience three hours in a room with your peers from around the country where you can just discuss a topic and how you are tackling it? Your facilitator will help introduce you to tools in Altru and you’ll begin building a plan or playbook to help you achieve your goals. You’ll walk away with a workbook filled with notes you’ve taken, interesting facts, statistics, and key concepts on the topic…a workbook personalized by you.

If you’ve been lucky enough to take one of our Organizational Best Practices classes, you know the idea of discussing a topic and taking notes in a workbook. That’s the idea with Solution Workshops, except we will talk Altru, discuss Altru tools, and try to talk about how the tools will help you solve a problem or provide a solution.

My hope is that by introducing the idea of solution workshops before introducing the actual workshop courses, you’ll consider the value of tackling topics (such as retention) with your peers. And I hope you’ll be on the watch for the course release announcement next month. I will make sure to link back to this blog so you can make the connection.

Oh, and for the record, I’ve been listening to a new album by a band that is made up of people from a couple of my favorite old hair bands. They have a song called Leap of Faith and the title spoke to me in this instance. If you like guitar-based rock and roll, do a quick Google search for The End Machine. Rock on!
