As the saying goes, “There’s no business like show business.” The adage holds true for folks on each side of the entertainment industry's spectrum of success. For the vast majority of actors and crewmembers, entertainment is a blue collar industry with no guaranteed income, little job security and none of the protections offered by more traditional employment. It can be a rough and tumble world to live in.

Fortunately there’s MPTF, a safety net of compassion for those in the industry who have fallen on hard times. For 95 years, MPTF has offered services and community to members of the television and film industry and their families who need support.

Since most people outside the industry associate entertainment with millionaire actors and directors that seem to be ubiquitous in our culture, it was crucial for MPTF to create a website that clearly articulates their mission and presents their vast services offerings for the entire entertainment community.

To that end, Blackbaud’s partnership with MPTF began with an intensive and creatively focused two-day onsite discovery, where the Blackbaud team met with MPTF stakeholders on The Wasserman Campus in Woodland Hills, California to learn more about MPTF’s website needs and to speak directly with MPTF community members.

Sitting at the table with entertainment industry professionals and hearing their personal stories about health, creativity, finances and many other topics related to living and aging well underscored how essential it would be to frame the website design around telling the full spectrum of stories of the MPTF community – from the clients, residents and their families, to volunteers, donors, and other industry professionals.

The subsequent user research, usability testing, and content strategy efforts that followed those one-on-one conversations with MPTF’s stakeholders and community members led to a true collaboration between Blackbaud and MPTF in developing a site architecture and visual design solution that speaks to the full range of needs of the entertainment industry community.

"We have so many different services, and we wanted to categorize them in ways that make sense,” says Vance Brawley, MPTF’s manager of digital media. “If you go to our website you see a link for immediate help for those in need. We don’t just work with folks in the industry; we work with their children as well as their parents.”

The services MPTF offers range from residential housing for seniors that includes an award-winning media center on their campus to home safety programs, counseling, behavioral health, palliative care, and so much more. “MPTF supports the community by keeping them vibrant and engaged through our programs,” Vance adds.

The robust capabilities of MPTF’s site empower anyone who’s been touched by their mission to share their story. "We've received stories from people of all ages,” Vance says. “We’ve gotten a story from a kid who came to MPTF through family needs and shared with us how he got started with us and volunteering. We have an older volunteer who comes to campus and volunteers at our gym. That diverse range of voices does a great job of communicating the breadth of our services."

In addition to the ease of blogging, the site offers a completely responsive experience. "The fact that it is responsive is a huge help because a lot of the people who visit our site or need our services are on set or out in the field browsing with their smart phone. When they can get the full breadth of what we do because of the responsiveness I think it's more effective and we're able to reach a much larger audience."
