Top 10 BBNC Sites - Louisiana SPCA

Published

We're counting down the top 10 websites built on Blackbaud NetCommunity. This week's installment to our list of Top 10 BBNC Sites comes from Louisiana SPCA.

Louisiana SPCA went live on Blackbaud NetCommunity for the first time in 2009. At the time, the site incorporated all of the latest industry best practices: lots of information communicated via text, a prominent navigation menu, and plenty of links to direct visitors to their donation page. Their first NetCommunity site was even profiled in a number of articles just like this one as an industry leading site.

When fall 2014 rolled around, mobile was well on its way to overtaking more traditional devices as the preferred method of browsing the web. “Everything was moving towards oversimplification. We wanted to give people a visual of what we do at Louisiana SPCA as opposed to bombarding them with words and options,” comments Rebecca. She notes that graphics have replaced text as the preferred means of communication on the web, so they needed tailored graphics to make the organization’s mission and impact clear to their supporters.

In addition, the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina was quickly approaching. The anniversary marked an important milestone for the Louisiana SPCA.  The shelter would receive local, regional and national attention for its incredible service during the crisis, as well as its success in rebuilding with the New Orleans community. Louisiana needed a vendor and platform it could count on to deliver for this important occasion.

In order to accomplish those objectives, Louisiana SPCA collaborated with Blackbaud’s design services team to design their new website late in 2014. Rebecca and her team began the process by researching other websites to find different components they liked and wanted to incorporate in their new site.

Once the team came to a consensus on which aspects of each website they wanted to incorporate their own, they shared those examples with their design team from Blackbaud. From there, Blackbaud got to work on designing a site that incorporated all of the key elements that Louisiana SPCA had shared with them. The options that Blackbaud came back with were image-driven website prototypes that left an impact on their audience regardless of the device used to view them.

The team at Louisiana SPCA agreed that the sites Blackbaud developed reflected their version, but they wanted to ensure the final version of their website had the support of the most important stakeholders: their constituents. They allowed their audience to weigh in by emailing constituents and asking them to review test versions of the new website.

Constituent feedback on the new designs was overwhelmingly positive. However, they didn’t want to leave anything to chance so they tracked clicks on each of the test sites to see how the designs was affecting audience behavior.

Louisiana SPCA’s collaboration with Blackbaud delivered a responsive website that makes an impact across different platforms and devices. Rebecca is pleased with the results of their collaboration with Blackbaud’s design team as well. "They took an idea or an image out of our heads and made it a reality."
