What's Preventing you from Deleting that SPE?

Published
From time to time it might be necessary to delete a student progression entry from a record.  For some records, no problem.  But for others, that big red X is grayed out.  Why might that be?  Here's a list of possibilities and what to check for each.

Possible Cause #1: Student has scheduling information

Scheduling information is dependent on a progression entry.  If a student doesn't have one, he can't be scheduled.  Because of this, you will not be able to delete a progression entry if a student is scheduled for any classes or has any course requests in the academic year you're trying to delete the progression entry for.  Check the student's schedule and drop the student from any classes in which they are enrolled and delete any existing course requests.

Possible Cause #2: Grades have been entered for the student

Like scheduling information, grades are dependent on a progression entry.  Go to Enter grades by student, pull up this student for the academic year you're trying to delete the progression entry for and check to see if there are any Grades, Skills, GPAs or Rankings.  If any of these exist, they will need to be removed before you can delete the progression entry.

Possible Cause #3: Student has attendance entries

Like scheduling information and grades, attendance is dependent on a progress entry (are you noticing a pattern yet?).  Check for any attendance entries and delete any day attendance that may exist for that academic year.  If the student has class attendance entries, that means they are enrolled in class so refer back to Possible Cause #1.  Dropping the student from the class will remove the class attendance entries.

Possible Cause #4: Residence Life information has been added for the academic year

If your school uses the optional module Residence Life then it's possible the student has a Residence Life entry for the academic year in question.  This information will need to be deleted before you can delete the progression entry.
