It's A New Year And What Does That Mean For Us?

There have been many changes that have occurred over the last few months.  One of which is a whole new administration in Washington.  I keep thinking about how this impacts the work that we do as fundraisers.  This is not about being Democrat, Independent or Republican but rather what are we seeing and what can we predict about how this will impact all of our lives moving forward.  Whether it is based in reality or not we have seen the public react strongly and quickly about the items in the news.  Just like during the recession we had to predict and prepare so that we can continue to meet the needs of our organizations.  For instance during the recession we saw a huge uptick in individuals donating to food banks.  People from many walks of life were using their services and therefore donations increased or the services they provide became more apparent to a greater number of the population.

My question is, how can we prepare and how are organizations preparing as we move forward in 2017?   I have heard of some organizations experiencing many new donors or increased number of gifts from current donors over the last few months.  How do we meet this demand going forward?  So for instance, if you are experiencing a greater number of new donors how are you responding to them?  Are you providing more than a receipt for taxes?  Is your messaging helping ensure you keep these donors moving forward?

There is also the dilemma of who of these new donors do we contact first.  This is where running these new donors through WealthPoint in ResearchPoint may be a good approach.  This can help you segment those new donors who might be major donors to you in the future.

The other thing that comes to mind is how are we marketing ourselves.   What we are hearing and seeing in the news should be impacting the messaging.  Are we going to highlight the arts or other areas within your organizations that may spark a passion with a perspective or current donor?  We are launching a great new set of data called Target Analytics Affluence which I see as a very effective tool to use in conjunction with your predictive models and wealth screening.  It can provide additional insight and on your constituents so that you are reaching the right people with the right message.  We are looking forward to sharing more details with you in the coming months.

So I want to hear from organizations on their thoughts on this matter.  Do you see changes moving forward whether it is an increase or decrease in giving?  What steps are you considering or have already taken into consideration?  How can we ensure that 2017 is a banner year for all nonprofits?
