Using SIC Codes in ResearchPoint

SIC (Standard Industiral Classification) Codes are how OSHA segments out all the various industries.

Since D&B is one of the wealth sources that prospects are run through in the wealth screening and it provides back the first four digits of the SIC code then having a basic understanding of the codes and how we can use them is crucial.

First of all I recommend you bookmark the following website -

https://www.osha.gov/pls/imis/sic_manual.html

This link above takes you straight to all the various Divisions associated with SIC.  The divisions are broken out from A - J and under each division you will note major groups that segment it out even further which ultimately provides you with the first four digits of the SIC code that you will find in ResearchPoint.

So, for instance, I am interested in looking for prospects in my database that are affiliated with the Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate industries (Division H).

From that I can choose the major groups that I want to focus on.  I have chosen four codes - 6211, 6221, 6712, 6719 which are dealing more with securities and investments.

I go to ResearchPoint and create an ad-hoc query.  Open up Wealth Information and click on Businesses -  in the second column scroll down till you see SIC codes and you will notice we will search up to six different codes that a company can list.

I generally like to query on the first two SIC codes.

I would then choose SIC Code 1 is "one of" or SIC Code 2 is "one of" containing each of the four codes I have listed above.

This way even if the company has not listed one of the four codes as their primary that we can ensure we capture as the second SIC code they identify with.  Be also mindful to choose "Confirmed" if you want your query only to return those constituents who are confirmed as being associated with that company.

Aside from obviously using this to determine major gift prospects and segmenting them by industry - you can possibly use these for events.  Would it be helpful to possibly seat individuals by like industries?
