Building Pyramids in ResearchPoint

Published
I was recently asked if ResearchPoint could help build pyramid levels to begin thinking about the silent phase of a campaign.

Yes it can, and one way it can help is using Research Lists.

The beauty of the Research List is that you can begin with a simple query.  You could use beginning query criteria that would make up the structure of your levels of your pyramid, such as a modeling score or wealth screened major giving capacity range.  If you are new to making a campaign pyramid, Blackbaud has a gift range calculator to help get you started.  https://www.blackbaud.com/nonprofit-resources/gift-range-calculator.

Let's say you are in the silent phase of a $2 million building campaign. (Plug that into the Blackbaud gift range calculator).  One of my needs is for 10 donors to each give me $25K.  I will need 40 prospects as a goal to hopefully have those 10 donors on a 4:1 conversion rate.  So I would want to create a Research List at $250,000.  Who could give me $25K or $25K divided by 5 (a gift over 5 years).   There are many ways I could populate this research list with a query.

If you have the results from one or several of these projects, you can incorporate their results in a query -
1. Target Gift Ranges (ProspectPoint modeling score) $5K or more
2. Major Giving Capacity (from a WealthPoint screening) - remember this is what they would give to every non-profit they are interested in, not just your organization, and if they are philanthropic and give 5% of their confirmed assets as a philanthropic gift

Let's say you use individuals who have a Target Gift Range of 8-12 ($5,001 or higher) or Major Giving Capacity from WealthPoint of $250,000 or more.  Name that query, create a selection, and then open Research Lists and Add a list.  Under Selection, use the magnifying glass to search and select your selection from your query.  Name your Research List to identify your working pyramid level and save.

Now this becomes your workbook for this pyramid level. You can remove (delete) people from this research list that you know will not give at this level (they are not deleted from the original query or from the database, only the research list), and you can add people individually to the research list even if they did not match the original query (Add member).

Some queries or data sources where you might find people to add to these levels one-by-one:
1. Larkspur information (from a WealthPoint screening) - Confirmed hidden wealth is certainly interesting
2. Major Giving Likelihood Scores (ProspectPoint modeling score) Propensity is certainly important as we are looking at likelihood to give a much larger gift than they may have given previously
3. Past giving and the relationship to your organization but also information that you learn as you cultivate the prospect (you can learn capacity information as part of the cultivation process).

Now:
  • Remember that you can print out the Research List - Under "More" at the top of the list, you have the option to select Download to CSV or Download to XLSX.
  • You can map the list if you have the optional module of Microsoft Bing Maps.
  • You can print out a Research List report on all members of that list - a one page prospect bio and wealth summary of each member in one report.
  • Screen the list as a group through WealthPoint (if that is a part of your ResearchPoint subscription)
Let us know how you have used ResearchPoint to help you with your Campaign Pyramids!
