How to apply a patch for the Financial Edge

Published

It’s time to apply the year end patch! Before updating, consider whether it addresses issues that impact your organization and be sure that you have the time needed to test and install it. The best place to get information on what fixes or updates the patch contains is located in the readme file available on the Downloads page for your product. While it’s always a good idea to be up-to date with your product, applying a patch may not be necessary.

Getting Started Checklist
  • Communicate with users that patch will be installed
  • Perform a backup of the database
  • Use a Windows account with local administrator rights
  • Know the location of the shared deploy folder for Financial Edge
The first two items that you should complete before installing the patch are to back up the database using the Blackbaud Management Console and inform your users that the patch will be installed. Make sure there are no active connections to the database and that users are logged out of the system and have saved their work. The Active Users feature in the Blackbaud Management Console will show active connections to the database and give you the option to disconnect them. While applying a patch to the system is quicker than upgrade or new installation, it’s important to give yourself enough time to test and install on all applicable machines. Consider installing the patch afterhours to not interfere with any items from the organization.
Download the patch from the website. It’s generally a good idea to create a new folder on the desktop of the server and place the patch there. Double-click on the patch file to launch it and install it on the server. Once finished, log into the Financial Edge to perform the database upgrade. This will apply the patch to the database. Once it’s complete, you’ll next log into to each workstation and attempt to log into the Financial Edge. It’ll prompt you to upgrade the workstation. This is normal. This process is updating the workstation version of the Financial Edge so your users can log in and access the database. Once this process is complete, communicate to your users they can access the database and continue their work.
