How To Win Grants (and Save Time!)

Published

“I’m excited to teach the ‘Best Practices: Grantseeking’ class, and help empower nonprofit organizations of all shapes and sizes to find and secure grants funding in the most efficient and effective manner.”– Shelley Hindmon: Blackbaud University Educational Consultant

As Director of Foundation and Corporate Relations at Salem Academy and College in Winston-Salem, N.C., Shelley Hindmon managed the institution’s grantseeking process and relationships. Now, as an instructor for Blackbaud University, Shelley is ready to share her years of experience and insight with you in our new class, Best Practices: Grantseeking.

In this virtual instructor-led class, Shelley and other knowledgeable instructors like her will help you to organize and manage a grantseeking program for your organization. Winning grants from foundations is possible for every nonprofit, but it requires time, effort, and strategic planning. Whether you have a grantseeking program, or are looking to start one, this is class is for you!

We’ll discuss the first four steps of the typical grantseeking process:
  1. Identify Your Needs: Before pursuing grants, think about the overall fundraising strategy of your organization and the role grants will play. What type of funding will you seek (project, general support, etc.)? Which projects need funding from grants?
  2. Research Grantmakers: Knowledge is power! The more you know about grantmakers—funding interests, grant history, key individuals—the better you’ll be able to assess if an opportunity is a good fit for your organization. How can you plan research to find the most useful information? What resources are available?
  3. Qualify Grantmakers: This may just be the most important step! Make the best use of your organization’s time and resources by pursuing the best grant opportunities. How do you create a system for qualifying grantmakers? How do other nonprofit organizations qualify grantmakers?
  4. Cultivate Relationships: Make initial contact with the grantmaker to learn more about the opportunity and start a conversation about your funding request. How do you make initial contact? What should you say?
