How Will You Excel in 2016?

Published
We’re almost three weeks into the New Year, and I’m curious—have you made any New Year’s resolutions to boost your professional development? If not, there’s still time. And, if you’re struggling to come up with some solid, achievable goals, here are some resolutions to take your career to the next level!

1. Take advantage of hands-on eTapestry training
This resolution is a no-brainer, if you’re just starting out with eTapestry. While there are many ways to get familiar with a new software, learning with an instructor can often mean the difference between a frustrating start and a happy and smooth one. On the other hand, if you’ve used eTapestry for eons and think there is nothing else to learn, I urge you to reconsider. Are you sure you’re using the product efficiently and effectively—the way it was designed to be used? Could you be making some costly errors or missing out on timesaving opportunities? Whether you’re a novice or veteran eTapestry user, resolve to enhance your expertise with hands-on eTapestry training!

2. Get eTapestry certified
The next logical progression in your eTapestry path is to attain eTapestry Fundamentals certification. If you have the fundamental knowledge, why not brag about it?
Action item! Set a date no later than early October (but sooner, ideally) to request the certification test. You have 90 days to complete the test, with leeway to attempt it a maximum of two times before the end of 2016.

3. Attend bbcon 2016
Blackbaud’s bbcon event is one of the largest annual gatherings of nonprofit professionals. Every year, Blackbaud brings an amazing opportunity to network with peers and learn from the very best in the nonprofit industry. In terms of professional development, this is one of the best ways to get energized and stay on top of industry best practices. And you could be there!

4. Stay connected
If bbcon 2016 just isn’t a possibility for you, don’t worry. The amazing eTapestry Community can help you connect with peers and Blackbaud members alike, ensuring you don’t miss the boat on any learning opportunities. Be sure to sign up for education alerts, so you don’t miss out!

5. Plan it, measure it
Many organizations require employees to plan their career development paths for the year, as does my company. Even though it sometimes feels time-consuming, writing out my goals keeps me accountable for my professional development and ensures that I actually make progress toward my career goals. If your organization doesn’t require you to plan for career growth, consider creating your own self-evaluation this year and perhaps discussing it with your manager. Not only will this help you stay focused, your self-initiative will demonstrate your drive and desire to grow. As you learn something new, be sure to document it so you can review your progress and accomplishments at year’s end.
Action item! To support your self-evaluation effort, you can print a copy of your Blackbaud educational transcript from Blackbaud’s Training Central. Set up a mid-year and end-of-year calendar reminder to print your transcript or certificates of completion.

I hope these suggestions sparked some ideas to help you shine in 2016. Do you have any helpful hints? Please share them here. We’d love to hear from you!
