Blackbaud Celebrates Juneteenth

Published

Learn how Blackbaud is celebrating Juneteenth ("June + 19th") in 2021 and listen to a Tedx Talk from Blackbaud's Vice President of Diversity & Inclusion, Michael Moore, as he shares his family's personal connection to Juneteenth.

This Juneteenth, we commemorate June 19, 1865—the day that the last enslaved people in America learned that they had been freedtwo-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was announced on January 1, 1863. Many people in this country and around the world will be taking time to reflect and celebrate the weight of this date—the final end to the institution of slavery in the United States.

Although many in the African American community have been celebrating Juneteenth for generations, today the date has gained increasing awareness as the United States advances its ongoing conversation on race and social justice.

How Blackbaud is celebrating Juneteenth 2021
Throughout the week, we are providing virtual learning opportunities for our employees to reflect on this observance and encouraging them to take time to learn about America’s history and origins.

As a part of this reflection, Blackbaud’s Vice President of Diversity & Inclusion, Michael Moore, shared a Tedx Talk he did in 2015 about his family’s story. His talk includes chilling details about his great-great-grandfather, Robert Smalls—an enslaved man who escaped by commandeering a Confederate Naval vessel, freeing his family and others from slavery. It’s such an inspiring story! Feel free to watch Michael’s Tedx Talk here.

Another resource we are sharing with our employees is a short documentary narrated by historian Karlos K. Hill, of the University of Oklahoma. In this video, Why all Americans should honor Juneteenth, he explains the history and significance of Juneteenth and what the holiday means for Americans today.

Thanks, Blackbaud; it's encouraging to see companies voice their opinion in support of their community.

Thanks for this post and for Michael Moore for sharing his story. My spouse helped with an exhibit about his Great-Great-Grandfather at the McKissick Museum a number of years ago and remembers being moved by this important story.
Thanks and may each of us have a meaningful Juneteenth during which we explore our own opportunities to grow in understanding and responsibility.

Hi Amy, this connection is incredible! What a small world! We're so happy to hear that Michael's story has had an impact on your spouse along with so many others. Thank you for sharing Amy!

Happy Early Juneteenth!
