About Gillian:
What do you like to do for fun? "Most of my free time is spent outdoors. I am very into cycling, cross country skiing, trail running, and gardening. I also enjoy wood carving and am getting started in furniture making." |
How did you get your start in the non-profit world?: "After studying anthropology, I decided I would like to work in museums because of their significance in bridging academic and public realms, and their engaging and supportive role in the community. I went on to complete a master’s degree in museum studies, and have been in the field about 3 years in various roles and institutions." |
What’s a typical day like for you? "We converted to Altru last June, and I started in August in this newly-created position, so it’s been a lot of quick learning for everyone here. These days, I find myself working on many small projects in different departments of the museum and working with colleagues to figure out ways Altru can be most useful for us. Aside from that, there’s always data cleanup!" What’s the best part of your job? "I love working at an expanding organization in a growing city, and the ability to be creative in developing efficient and effective solutions." |
Do you have any advice for someone starting out in the non-profit field? "I’ve found it helpful to be very flexible and gain experience in several areas of the non-profit world, and always look for opportunities to expand your knowledge, either in your current role or out on your own. You never know where you’ll find an opportunity, or where your experience will lead you." What do you love about the Blackbaud Community? "Being completely new to Altru six months ago, I was very excited to find the community so helpful at a time when everyone at our organization was just starting out with the program. It’s been an indispensable feature and I appreciate everyone that takes the time to contribute their ideas and solutions." |
