About Sofia:

Tell us about your family (fur babies count!) "I am a single mom. I have two beautiful kids. I have 3 sisters and 2 brothers. We are very close family. We love to get together and talk, dance and tell stories. My father always told us that the most important thing was to love each other above all things and that is what we do. I am blessed with a great family."

Where do you live? "Miami, Florida."

What do you like to do for fun? "I love to excercise. I like to watch a good movie that helps me to relax. I do not like violent movies. Love to shop. I am a bargain shopper. I also  love to bake. I am learning how to bake cakes."

What’s a life achievement you are particularly proud of? "I am actually proud of learning Raiser's Edge back in 1990. I had just graduated from College and started working at Florida International University. The University purchased Raiser's Edge and I dediced I was going to make a career out of it and I did. Worked 15 years at Florida International University and presently I am working at Miami Children's Health Foundation. I have been working at the present foundation for 11 years. I was hired when they also purchased Raiser's Edge and they needed help because the staff did now know how to use it."

What’s one memory that always makes you smile? "When I found out I was pregnant with my son (first born) and later with my daughter, this made me super happy. I am very close to one of my sisters. Every time I think of all the good times we have had together."

What is one interesting fact about yourself most people don't know? "Even though I am very hyper, I can be calm when times are difficult. I sometimes don't  recognize myself."

Tell us about your organization: "My organization raises money for the health of Children. The hospital we represent is Nicklaus Children's Hospital. In the last 11 years I have been here, I have seen the growth and I am very proud of it. We work hard so no child have to leave South Florida to get treated any place else because our hospital was not able to do take care of them. We have more than 450,000 patient visiting Nicklaus Children's Hospital facilities throughtout South Florida. 90 Countries are represented in the population of patients we served. 8 of Nicklaus Children's Hospital pediatric subspecialty programs ranked amont "America's Best Children's Hospitals" in the U.S. News and World Report's 2016-2017 edition. 69% of Nicklau's Children's Hospital patients are on Medicaid or other financial assistance program.
The hospital vision is to inspire hope and promote lifelong health by providing the best care of every child. The hospital vision is to be where the children are which means being there through all stages of health and life, both physically and mentally. To be a trusted partner to children and their families, not only in time of illness, but throughout their life journey."

What’s a typical day like for you? "I wake up around 5:30 am. I like to get to work early because I do not like traffic. I oversee the Development Services department at Miami Children's Health Foundation. I am coaching my staff with any need they have when entering gifts, doing letters, entering event information or sending invoices and also any reports needed by other members of the team. Because of my experience with Raiser's Edge, my job is to use the system the best we can to make it work for our organization."

What’s the best part of your job? "The best part of my job is finding how to make it better. What query to use, how to design the query or queries to get the job done. I love the challenge. I love that my job is something new every day. Love to design reports from RE that will help the staff accomplish their goals."

What advice would you give someone starting out in the non-profit field? "The first advisc is to ask questions. We learn by asking. The other advice that is super important is to learn the system, in this case Raiser's Edge because there are lots of organization using it. It is an excellent skill to have in this field."

What do you love about the Blackbaud Community? "That it keep us informed. You can ask questions and you will get answers. It is nice to talk to people that are going through the same sistuations that you are going through."
Finally.. if you had 24 hours before the asteroid hit.. what would you spend your time doing?  "If I had 24 hours left before the asteroid hit, I will talk to people about loving each other, about the love of  God."
