Tell us about your family (fur babies count!) "My family consists of my husband Walt and our 2 daughters Allyson and Lee. Allyson is a college graduate and off on her own and Lee will be starting her Sophomore year this fall at the University of Mn in Duluth, MN."

Where do you live? "Minneapolis, M.N."

What do you like to do for fun? "My major in college was Art and that part of my life is still very important to me. I have been a watercolor artist for many years and mostly do landscape paintings of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. I have also taken quite a few classes where I have learned tradition oil painting techniques.

Another art medium that I work in is fabric. For the past 8 years I have been learning how to quilt and do most of the work by hand. I also like to knit and crochet.I have way too many things that I like to do and too little time to do them!

I also like to cook and on Saturday mornings you'll find me at the farmer's market. My husband and I like to learn about wine and like to visit wineries when we travel and have even found some decent wineries here in Minnesota.

Finally - I love to read and definitely wish that I had more time for that."

What’s a life achievement you are particularly proud of? "It has to be raising two terrific daughters and having a happy marriage for 33 years. That is what life is all about."

What’s one memory that always makes you smile? "Thinking about my Dad who is no longer with us. He made even the most ordinary things extraordinary."

What is one interesting fact about yourself most people don't know? "An intertesting fact is that I've won blue ribbons at the Minnesota State Fair for my jelly. My paintings have also been in the fine arts exhibit at the fair."

What are three things on your bucket list? "Travel to Norway and Sweden, go to the International Quilt Festival in Houston and win an award for one of my quilts."

Tell us about your organization "St. Paul Academy and Summit School is a school that I'm proud to work at. Our mission statement is: "Shaping the minds and hearts of the people who will change the world." What could be better than being a part of that?

I work in an Advancement department of 8 people and I really think that I have found my niche as Advancement Services Director. I have managed an RE database for 3 different organizations over the past 14 years. Probably the most exciting thing has been RENXT which we got 2 years ago. It's really been a game changer for our department and I look forward to see what comes next for the product."

What’s a typical day like for you? "I manage all aspects of RE, RENXT and Online Express. Every day is different and every part of the FY is different. We all work hard and work together well as a team."

What’s the best part of your job? "Learning new things. Over the past few years Online Express and NXT has really changed the way we work and I always look forward to learning something new."

What advice would you give someone starting out in the non-profit field? "Get proper training. When I started my first job 14 years ago I didn't know anything. My director took a chance on me and sent me to regional RE training that was happening the week I started. That was the best thing that could have happened. I learned so much during that week of training and have been able to build on that by taking many online classes."

What do you love about the Blackbaud Community? "Everyone is willing to take time and share there expertise with others. I've really liked getting to know people in the Blackbaud Community and then meeting them in person at bbcon. Before the Blackbaud Community I felt like I was on my own. Now there are so many people to talk to who do the same job that I do. Things have really changed in the 14 years I've been doing this."
Finally, if you could have a theme song, what would your theme song be? "The soundtrack from Hamilton because that's been in my head for 2 years now."

Great profile Karen!  And I agree with Eileen on both counts - AWESOME mission statement and I'd love to see some of your art if you are up for sharing.
Karen, what an excellent and inspiring mission statement for a school! Would love it if Crystal, or you, would post some of your art. I'm sure it would make many of us in the community smile :  )
