Tell us about your family (fur babies count!) "I am the only child to my parents and proud of it! Many close friends have filled the role of brother and sister, and that has been the most rewarding part of being an only child! The majority of my immediately family lives where I grew up in and around Peoria, Illinois. I now live in Bourbonnais, IL, just about 10 minutes north of my work location in Kankakee! While I currently don't have any fur babies of my own (I have one basset hound mix who lives a spoiled life with my mother) I'm hoping to adopt in the near future! "

Where do you live? "Bourbonnais, Illinois."

What do you like to do for fun? "I am a HUGE movie nerd. I like to go see a movie or two a week, and if it awards season, sometimes more! When it's nicer weather out, I enjoy riding my bike at the local state park and trying out new interesting restaurants with my friends. Traveling is also a hobby of mine, and I enjoy listening to murder-mystery podcasts along the way!"
What’s a life achievement you are particularly proud of? "I am the first person in my immediate family to attend college and hold a bachelors degree, and I am very proud of it! The moment I walked across the stage and received my diploma will always be special to me."

What’s one memory that always makes you smile? "One of my all-time favorite sports teams is the Chicago Cubs. I can still remember (quite vividly) the feeling I had walking into Wrigley Field for my first Cubs game: the bright lights, the smell of hot dogs, and the butterflies in my stomach! The feeling of seeing the field and hearing the organ play always makes me smile!"

What is one interesting fact about yourself most people don't know? "I have the strangest phobia...FISH! I do not eat fish, swim with them, or like to go fishing. I'll take a pool any day, but swim in a lake/river/ocean? No way!"

What are three things on your bucket list? "Receive a Masters Degree, visit Barcelona, and meet Barack Obama!"
Tell us about your organization: "Riverside Medical Center is located in Kankakee, IL and is part of Riverside Healthcare, a fully integrated healthcare system serving the needs of individuals and communities throughout the counties of Kankakee, Iroquois, Will, Grundy and beyond. As part of the system, Riverside Medical Center, a 312-bed hospital, provides a full scope of inpatient and outpatient care and is a nationally recognized, award-winning Level II Trauma hospital with nationally-leading programs in heart care, cancer care, neurosurgery and orthopedics. Its reputation for nursing excellence has made Riverside the area's only Magnet® Recognized hospital. Because Riverside's clinical performance ranks them among the top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide, Healthgrades has named them a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award, and Truven Health Analytics presented them with the 100 Top Hospitals® award. The Riverside Healthcare Foundation raises funds for the health system for use in facility construction and repair, new equipment acquisition, community health care education initiatives and clinical research."

What’s a typical day like for you? "A typical day for me is pretty split between working at my desk on projects, events, and daily operations, as well as being out and in our community meeting business owners, community friends, and longtime donors to the organization. The primary responsibility of my job is ensuring that our corporate sponsors and businesses are accurately acknowledged and stewarded for their generosity. Between meetings with internal and external partners and operating any gift information into The Raiser's Edge, each day is busy and doesn't always look the same!"

What’s the best part of your job? "I have my best days when I am meeting new people and getting to know the communities we serve. I have the fortunate opportunity to be out at community events supporting and encouraging growth and development- that is my favorite part! I love representing Riverside to various groups and organizations to not only promote the good work of the hospital, but also the foundation and how we support the highest level of health care to our community."
What advice would you give someone starting out in the non-profit field? "There is nothing more rewarding than working for an organization with a clear and distinct mission to better our world, and THAT is what non-profit is all about! Never take the mission of your organization for granted. Believe in it wholeheartedly. Advocate for all the good your organization is doing. Be your organization's biggest cheerleader. It will be extremely rewarding to see the successes of your organization when you think of the impact you are making outside the walls of your office."

What do you love about the Blackbaud Community? "I really enjoy the support and encouragement the Blackbaud Community fosters. It's a relief to see so many other non-profit professionals walking the same path as you, and knowing you have partners to lean on is phenomenal. I'm always finding new ways to plug in and use the resources that are available to me!"
Finally, if you had a theme song, what would your theme song be? "If I had to choose just one song...it would 100% be 'Sweet Caroline.' Why? Because who can resist banding together with some close friends and singing to the top of your lungs 'BUM BUM BUM!' That's the kind of atmosphere I'm trying to create when I walk into any room!"

I LOVE the way you approached the theme song question. It is an infectious song, and that's a great atmosphere to be in!
I love movies too. My husband and I frequently go on movie binges.
Congrats on the spotlight!

Let me echo what others have said.  Congrats on being a first generation college grad!

Kalen, it's nice to meet you.  Now I'll sing Sweet Caroline in my head today.  And if you have a chance to ever come to Boston for a Sox game,  Sweet Caroline is sung between innings.  An entire stadium singing!
Great to learn more about you Kaleb. I'm with you on fishing and eating fish, although I have no problem swimming in a lake.
Major congrats on being the first generation college grad!  Well done.
