Furniture Moving And Process Improvement

My wife, brother-in-law, and I visited my in-laws this past weekend.

My mother-in-law asked us to help move some bedroom furniture due to an upcoming floor refinishing. She laid out a plan for where to move the bedside table and chairs (the basement) and where to move the bed frame and mattress (garage) to get them out of the way. It sounded like a good plan, so we all nodded and started disassembling what we could.

We successfully moved the chairs and table downstairs and were taking a little break while contemplating the most daunting task—the bed!

We discussed who should move any fragile things out of harm’s way, who would grab which side of the mattress, and whether we should move the bed frame or mattress first. That’s when my wife asked a question:

“Wait, why are we moving the bed out to the garage and not just to an area of the house that isn’t going to be refinished?”

Great question!

We all agreed that NOT moving the heavy and unwieldy mattress down hallways, around corners, and out into a dusty garage was a brilliant idea. After clearing the new plan with my mother-in-law, we followed my wife’s suggestion and moved the mattress and bed frame into a nearby section of the house—easy as pie.

We were right on the verge of doing an unnecessary, time-consuming, and unpleasant task when my wife saved us by taking a step back and asking a simple but valuable question. Once we considered it, we found a much faster and easier solution that served our needs perfectly.

Think about it. At your organization, are there any Raiser’s Edge related processes which might benefit from stepping back and taking a second look? Are any procedures followed unquestioningly because “that’s the way things have always been done”?

Take a step back and reconsider your organization’s Raiser’s Edge procedures with Blackbaud University’s Solution Workshop, Raiser’s Edge Workshop: Process Improvement and Streamlining. This interactive workshop discusses best practices and will help you evaluate whether your processes are as efficient as they can be.

Hey Karen Stuhlfeier‍ - thank you for the feedback, I passed it along to Mike Adams‍ and he switched up the analogy.
I appreciate the analogy - but the husband should cook his own pot roast if he's so concerned about how his wife is making it. The story sounds pretty dated - and sexist.
