Adding "Tags" or categories in Raiser's Edge NXT for Government Grants

Hey there, Blackbaud community -

We're trying to track government grants in Raiser's Edge NXT using Opportunities.

Our plan was to set it up by creating one big “purpose” labeled as Government Grants, and t

One thing we'd like to be able to do is sort different grants/opportunities by a custom category. For instance, we apply for several hypothetical “Early Childhood Grants,” or we apply for several grants for “Southwest Region."

Is there a good way to track this with a custom tag or Detail somehow? Some way we can more easily sort or view that? Something we could maybe search or sort?

if your plan is to be able to report/get list of opporunity based on the “sub-category”, your choices are limited. While Opportunity does have custom field, it is not filterable on RE NXT list directly.

The only options that you have is Campaign and Fund. So if the sub category you are looking at is somehow also Campaign Fund related, you can use that.

If you want to verture into custom using SKY API, then the door opens up a lot more to allow you to filter and report on other fields.

The first option that comes to mind is the Fund. Typically, if you are applying for a grant, you're applying for a grant for a specific programmatic area at your organization, and that would equate to a Fund. Having said that though, I know plenty of customers who do not use Funds in that way. That's disappointing, but that is an entirely different topic!

If Fund won't work, and your Campaigns also don't lend themselves well to this type tracking, I would consider the Purpose field. The table entries in the Purpose field are user-defined, so you can set up whatever you want them to be.

One other option is to use Opportunity Custom Fields (Attributes in database view) but I would exhaust other options that are more visible first.

@Jeremy Wong Could you also use a naming convention for your Opportunities? Since there are limited fields available in Opportunity lists, I was trying to find another way that you could achieve your goals.
