Gift type of OTHER

Hello - Is anyone using the "other" gift-type?  At a past employer, we used this type to record gifts from United Way.  The cash entry would be added to the United Way record and an other gift type entry would be added to the individual.  It was much easier than dealing with soft credits.

    Hi Tracy,

In the past I've used Other to indicate a transaction that needed to be reported on separately, primarily because the transaction was not philanthropic in nature. Renting out space was probably the most common scenario for me. I have worked with organizations that also used it in the manner you're describing with UW gifts or similar situations.
  • That's interesting!  We use the campaign field to record non-charitable entries.

  • We, like Matt, use gift type Other to record non gifts - miscellaneous income.
  • We use "other" for reconciling items that does not go through usual gift processing such as the increase in value of a life insurance, or premiums paid by donors, etc but are still considered as donations.  These are usually figures provided by Finance to us.  Non-philanthropic items are tracked through campaigns and funds.
  • Thank you for your ideas.  We are implementation stage and having some questions regarding how others have handled gifts from a Third Party who took the fee out for processing.  The donor clearly would get the full benefit amount, but we have learned that a soft credit cannot be more than the original amount.  How have others handled?  We were considering the OTHER field option.  Thoughts?

I just posted about this quandry a minute ago. :-)

  • For third parties who take fees:

In RE we give the donor full credit. Then in the FE batch we add extra entries to expense the fees.
