Book Recommendations?

I live in a rural area where internet access is not great, so I can't binge watch Netflix (gasp!) and thus I like to read when I have some downtime and I am curious what other people are reading or would suggest?

I just finished reading Moby Dick. I was doing it for a book club and tonight is the last night. I also read and an abridged version of it to my son who is eight and we just finished that a few minutes ago and now I am embarking upon very what could be critical book for my next couple months on setting limits with your strong-willed child.

I'm also in the end of reading Becoming and then I get back into the Games of Thrones books. I also have the third book of the Wool series to finish.

If you like thrillers, I really enjoyed Dr. Sleep by Stephen King. Especially if you read The Shining. If you haven't read The Shining, I recommend that!

Just finished for a book club: Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk - insane title huh? Try the book! It came out in like 2009 but didn't get translated for a bit. Writer has won many prized. I didn't get it at all...at first...and like ten pages in, restarted the book and had an absolute epiphany. Haha. Very odd and funny.

Recently was also read Trevor Noah's Born a Crime - an excellent book about his live in South Africa - post Apartheid. I never watch him on the late night show, but he has had a very interesting life. If you can, listen to the audio on this title.

I'm currently reading Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover for a book club. I'm not usually a non-fiction fan (love the escape of fiction), but so far this is well-written and engaging. I believe the next book we'll be reading in June is a title by Malcolm Gladwell, but I'll have to confirm that.

Our next book club book is My Antonia by Willa Cather. I am sure I have it here in the house somewhere - from long ago. Our libraries remained closed.

These are all great recommendations and I am currently reading The Shining, it was available as an ebook since our libraries are closed as well. So far so good, thanks Crystal Bruce‍!

I also recently read Evicted by Matthew Desmond. It was an excellent book and made me appreciate of some of the things in my life I might consider basic that are a struggle for others.

If you have never read the Harry Potter series, that's always a good choice; this also applies to the Lord of the Rings series. If you like action books, Vince Flynn, Tom Clancy, and David Baldacci have written good character series. If you like Science Fiction - Michael Crichton has multiple series including Jurassic Park. 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Animal Farm, The Great Gatsby, Brave New World, etc. are also good reads/re-reads.

Dan Snyder‍ There are some great quarantine reading lists floating around the internet,which I will link below. Our Library staff have been doing FB Live readings from the following books everyday using FB groups, Moby Dick and Jane Eyre, and will be doing more as we just finished Jane Eyre! Check out your local Library on social and see if they are doing anything like this.

I have been re-reading the LOTR trilogy and the Unfinished Tales in addition to some other lighter reading, like Emma Straubs We're All Adults Here. Highly recommend them all and I second Education. Evicted is also a really great read, though maybe too on the nose right now with everything that is going on, if you're interested in non-fiction.

Dan Snyder‍ Totally missed that you had already read Eviction, my bad, but glad you enjoyed it. I just remembered that I gave my brother a book recently and he enjoyed it so much he has been giving it to others to read. Its called Stranger in the Woods by Michael Finkle. Really interesting read about a man who lived by himself in the woods of Maine for 27 years.

I'm a big murder mystery fan. Anything Agatha Christie has written, with any main character, and Sue Grafton are my favorite authors. Both have written many books! Sue's series is best read in order if you can, in my opinion, but it's possible to skip a book and still catch up because she does a summary of past history in each book enough that you can still follow.

I have been living under a rock, apparently, and only just found out that Tor.com offers an ebook for free every month. If you're into sff, it's worth signing up for - serendipitously for me, I borrowed the Murderbot series by Martha Wells from the library last year and was trying to get on the waitlist to borrow them again, and they offered a copy of each of the 4 novellas in early May, right before the new novel became available to buy. (The series won a Hugo shortly after I read them the first time, so the waitlist has blossomed.)

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.... Hands down one of the best books I have ever read, and I'm a big reader! It's a non-fiction book; a truly engaging story that is so well written. It's always hard to just pick one book, but it was the first one to pop into my head when I read your question.

Why am I not surprised to learn that you are a reader?

On a whim I picked up Penance by Kanae Minato. It is the best book I have read for quite some time. Printed on the back cover, "A tense, chilling story of four young women haunted by a childhood trauma." ... I will be looking for more books by Minato.
