Seeking an Interim Controller, Glenview, IL

Kohl Children's Museum of Greater Chicago is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide experiences and memories to build a foundation for a lifetime of learning. Through our museum space in Glenview, IL, we offer engaging learning environments featuring interactive exhibits and programs that encourage young children to become effective learners through play. As part of our commitment to ensuring that every child has access to the best learning experiences possible, we extend our footprint throughout the Chicagoland area through outreach programs, traveling exhibits, and partnering with educators to inspire meaningful change in the education of young children.

We are seeking an Interim Controller to provide timely and accurate financial information for use by executive management, staff, banks, foundations and donors.

Essential Duties include:

  • Manage KCM's accounting and financial reporting functions; exercise control over accounting procedures and policies to ensure compliance with organizational policies; advise other affected personnel of policies and accounting methods.
  • Prepare periodic financial statements, subsidiary schedules, and internal financial reports, including the review of the 941 and W2 filings for reasonableness and accuracy
  • Guide financial decisions by monitoring and enforcing policies and procedures
  • Protect assets by monitoring and enforcing internal controls
  • Comply with federal, state, and local legal requirements, enforcing adherence to requirements, filing financial reports, tax reports, and advising management on needed actions
  • Manage the annual audit process with public accountants
  • Ensure accurate and timely recognition of revenue, including proper treatment of grant, and other donated income; assist with restricted grants tracking and analysis
  • Manage outstanding debts, including meeting all scheduled obligations, including reporting including timely payment of all obligations and wire transfers as needed
  • Ensure that all checking accounts have adequate cash balances to cover Accounts Payable and payroll disbursements;
    1. Work with CFO to transfer funds between bank accounts to ensure adequate funds
    2. Manage cash balances analysis and maintain back-up documentation for all fund transfers;
    3. Reconcile bank accounts monthly
  • Ensure that bank account signature authority is delegated and accurate
  • Properly manage and delegate employee expenditure authority

The ideal candidate will be interested in a part-time opportunity, although full-time may be considered. Position requirements include the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • Certified Public Accountant certification, preferred
  • A minimum of six years of experience required with a broad range of accounting or finance functions
  • Three years supervisory experience with superior interpersonal skills
  • Experience with Blackbaud software, particularly Financial Edge
  • High level of analytical and financial skills, with proven experience and proficiency with accounting software
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to manage deadlines and prioritize workload to meet needs
  • Friendly demeanor and ability to work with individuals of all levels of an organization
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in office technology and software (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive matters
  • Superior problem solving and written and verbal communication skills

Physical Activities Include:

  • Customary office-related activities: standing, walking, sitting, bending
  • Light lifting (up to 20 pounds)
