The Financial Counselor position functions as a primary liaison between patients, health center staff, patient services, insurance companies/additional funding sources and reports directly to the Director Revenue Cycle. The primary functions of this position entail insurance benefit interpretation as it relates to services provided in our health centers, education and counseling on procedure costs, insurance coverage, and alternative options for non-covered procedures. The Financial Counselor is an advocate in implementing our mission of “Affirming the human right to reproductive health and freedom.” Performs other related duties as assigned.

This position will impact our mission with the following contributions

  • Contact third-party insurance carriers to verify patient’s insurance eligibility, benefits and requirements.
  • Work in collaboration with the health center staff to obtain any additional clinical documentation requested from insurance carriers.
  • Be available to speak with patients by phone (and occasionally face-to-face) to help them understand procedure costs and financial responsibilities.
  • Calculate cost of procedures (prompt pay, deductible, coinsurance, co-pay) and cohesively explain to patients.
  • Provide excellent customer service by resolving concerns and responding to inquiries in a professional and engaging manner.
  • Screen patients for eligibility for other potential funding sources when a patient is not able to meet their liability related to their service.
  • Review Medicaid requirements and process applications to the program as necessary.
  • Check for previous balances/payment history, collect co-payments, deductibles, or co-insurance.
  • Work with Revenue Management staff to assist with collecting old balances and work with physician office staff when patient benefits are not accepted.
  • Advise self-pay patients of their medical care options for future follow-up care.

Typical Work Hours

Full time position working 40 hours per week. M-F, regular business hours with an occasional weekend or evening.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of one year of health insurance billing and/or health insurance collection experience.
  • Knowledge of government programs such as Medicaid and PMAPs.
