Herbs in your front yard to share with neighbors, Yes or no?

Hi Community,

I moved into a new home in May. We are on a residential road (25 mph), not much traffic and we have a big front yard. I want to plant herbs in the front yard with a sign that says please take some herbs. Has anyone tried this and have any tips on what the sign should say? Has anyone tried this before and has any advice?

Love this idea - we have an abundance of herbs growing in our backyard that we wish more people could partake.

I think it's a great idea! We live out in farming country. It's not uncommon to drive down a country lane in the fall and see a sign saying: “Pumpkins - help yourself” or “Tomatoes FREE”.

For herbs, I feel like most people don't know how to identify what herb they're looking at. Adding small garden signs in your herb garden itself might be a good idea - labeling them, Chives, Rosemary, things like that. I love herbs and plant them in my garden as Nature's insect-repellents for my vegs. Certain types can also make a nice, low, bushy groundcover in amongst flower landscaping.

I did this at my house, but I found that most people needed an invitation to feel comfortable doing this. I think it's a great way to welcome new neighbors.
