Summary Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director of Fundraising is responsible for leading Nevada HAND’s fundraising efforts, and effectively stewarding and cultivating donors. This individual will lead a small and dedicated team to provide the necessary vision, leadership, and fundraising skills which will enable the organization to achieve its fundraising targets. Specifically, the Director of Fundraising will plan, organize, and execute fundraising campaigns. This individual will collaborate with the VP of Corporate Affairs on the overall development, management, and rapid growth of Nevada HAND’s fundraising endeavors.
Essential Functions and Work Duties:
The following essential functions of this position are performed personally, in cooperation with the supervisor, and/or in coordination with other staff. Additional work functions and duties may be assigned.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive, innovative, and integrated fundraising plan with a focus on major giving, institutional donors, foundations and corporate partnerships, and grants.
- Work with the VP of Corporate Affairs and the Fundraising Department to meet/exceed annual fundraising targets, coordinate fundraising strategies, support ongoing major giving efforts, and develop new and innovative fundraising initiatives.
- Manage the relationship with Nevada HAND’s fundraising consultant.
- Lead the management of all donor information, and develop a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors.
- Proactively identify donor prospects among individuals, corporations, and foundations, and develop appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies.
- Manage the use of Raiser’s Edge for data entry and gift processing.
- Work collaboratively with the Grants Manager to ensure optimal grant acquisition including research, proposal writing, timely submission, and reporting.
- Work with the Communications and Marketing Department to drive donor-centric branding, messaging, and visibility to deepen engagement with Nevada HAND’s fundraising priorities. Develop and manage media outreach strategy, policy, and campaigns with print, online, electronic, and broadcast media to enhance the visibility of Nevada HAND across key stakeholder/prospective donor audiences.
- Schedule personal visits and prepare solicitations for individuals and donor groups capable of making gifts or interested in making planned gifts.
- Seek opportunities to invite or accompany the Vice President of Corporate Affairs and President & CEO on visits with prominent prospects or high-value donors.
- Launch Nevada HAND’s emerging leaders program, HANDHELD Collaborative (HHC), and lead the successful administration of the program from recruitment to member and program management.
- Manage Nevada HAND’s annual Employee Giving Program.
- Create written donor communications including solicitations, stewardship reports, impact stories, renewal letters, and other outreach materials.
- Communicate persuasively and professionally through personal visits, written proposals, appeal letters, email, and phone calls.
Other Functions and Work Duties:
- Perform other duties as from time to time may be determined necessary for the well-being of the total operation.
- Coordinate specific work tasks with other personnel within the department as well as with other departments in order to ensure the smooth and accurate flow of work and information.
- Perform tasks that are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but which may be altered or re-designed upon individual circumstances.
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- A minimum of five (5) years of previous experience with fundraising/development in a non-profit office or foundation office.
- A minimum of two (2) years of supervisory or leadership experience.
- Experience with and knowledge of Raiser’s Edge.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- The ability to establish an effective rapport with current and potential donors, business people, civic groups, philanthropic entities, and colleagues.
- Excellent organizational skills, with special attention to detail.
- Must be able to exercise sound independent judgment and discretion within the assigned role to complete assignments.
- Excellent oral, interpersonal, and written communication skills; must have strong public speaking skills.
- Ability to maintain confidential information.
- Committed to, compassionate about, and engaged in Nevada HAND’s mission.
- Knowledge of prospect research, analysis, and fundraising strategies.
- Solid understanding of fundraising and donor management database systems.
Physical Requirements:
- Able to sit at a desk for extended periods of time.
- Reaching - frequently extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
- Kneeling - frequently bending legs at knees to come to rest on knee or knees.
- Stooping - frequently bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
- Handling - frequently seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands.
- Regularly required to use hand to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear using telephone, computer keyboard, mouse and calculator while seated at a desk.
- Ability to lift files up to 20 pounds from the ground level to 4 feet in height and move them from shelf to shelf in storage.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up-to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
