The Ackerman Institute for the Family, based in NYC, is seeking a full-time Associate Director, Development & Institutional Giving. For more information on the Ackerman Institute, visit: www.ackerman.org The Associate Director, Development & Institutional Giving reports to the Chief Development and External Affairs Officer and will be responsible for managing the development and implementation of a comprehensive institutional giving program aligned with the Ackerman Institute’s mission and objectives that considers organization-wide programs and initiatives in the context of local, regional, national, and international foundations and government agencies. This includes fundraising strategies for all restricted support at Ackerman, including scholarships, community training, project and center work, among others. At least 50% of time will be focused on fundraising for Ackerman’s Gender & Family Project, while the other half of work will be on other support for Ackerman. While the primary focus is foundation and government grants management, there are also strategic support needs for special events and major gifts from individuals. This position requires a strategic thinker, who has strong organizational and communication skills and the capacity to translate multidimensional initiatives and programs into targeted grant requests. Successful candidates will have enthusiasm for Ackerman’s programming and mission, complemented by a strong background in grant writing or major gifts preferably in a healthcare, educational, and/or social service non-profit setting. Occasional work on evenings and weekends is required. Essential Job Functions: Primary responsibilities include: Manages restricted project support for varying organizational initiatives, including projects and centers, scholarships, community training opportunities, and more. At least 50% of time will be dedicated to fundraising for the Gender & Family Project, while the other half will be focused on other support areas. Writes and prepares all solicitations, proposals, reports, acknowledgments, budgets, and other correspondence for submission to foundation and government funders for annual operating support and restricted project needs for the Ackerman Institute and its various projects/ centers. Works collaboratively with members of all departments, including finance, development, training, the clinic, and various projects and centers, to gather information needed for proposals and reports. Identifies and researches prospective foundation and government donors and reaches out to them to secure gifts from new supporters, while also exploring the effectiveness of new funding strategies and making recommendations. Oversees and manages the cultivation and stewardship of current and prospective foundation and government donors through meetings, events, and recognition opportunities. Manages and maintains a strategic grant schedule and calendar that meets the funding needs and goals of the organization. Works across the External Affairs and various departments to ensure proper crediting on print and digital materials. Maintains foundation and government donor and prospect records in both the fundraising database (Raiser’s Edge) and in electronic and paper files. Manages the preparation of institutional giving briefs, agendas, and other materials for meetings with current and prospective foundation and government donors. Acts as a liaison for all grants-related correspondence, supporting the President & CEO, Chief Development and External Affairs Officer, Project heads, and others in their communications with foundation and government funders. Supports organization-wide and development initiatives. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree required. Minimum of 3 years of experience in grant writing or direct major gift fundraising required. Experience and fluency in working with gender, sexual, racial diversity/justice, and LGBTQ+ community required. Knowledge of and experience working in foundation, corporate, and government grant processes, funding sources, and nonprofit fundraising principles. Ability to manage all aspects of proposal development from conceptualization to submission to timely reporting on awarded grants. Superior writing and editing skills, demonstrated proposal writing experience, and a deep understanding of budgets. Superior communication and organizational skills; persistence and excellent follow-through. Excellent research skills and attention to detail. Proven record of being an innovative, strategic and independent thinker. Ability to handle multiple tasks at once under deadline pressure. Capacity to work independently, take initiative and to interact effectively with all levels of staff, volunteers, donors, and prospects. Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and new opportunities. Can-do positive attitude and team orientation, with ability to interact with diverse people at all levels. Proficiency in Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge NXT, MS Office Suite (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and Zoom with the ability to learn new or updated software. When the Institute re-opens (TBD), this position will be based out of The Ackerman Institute’s New York, NY location.
