Question of the day (2 of 4) Same points apply!

Last week a there was a lively conversation about who we were "fans" of. Among our table we had:

Star Wars Dancing GIF
Star Wars Fan
Michael Franti
A Michael Franti & Spearhead Fan
Movie gif. Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, Rupert Grint as Ron, and Emma Watson as Hermione in Harry Potter sit in a row and turn toward us as they applaud happily.
Three Harry Potter Fans
Loop Space GIF by xponentialdesign
An Astronomy Fan
classic film ballet GIF
and a fan of ballets.

It was a conversation that brought out laughter, passionate stories, showing each other videos and mostly learning more about our friends.

Being intrigued about how a simple question could create a two + hour conversation, I found this “Science Explains…Why being a fan is good for you" article. And now I am a believer of being a fan!

Sooooooo, what person, place or thing has earned your fandom?

  • @Elizabeth Perron Big fan of Terry Pratchett's writing and now enjoy some Neil Gaiman. But, also, my household is big on Dr. Who and Star Trek (more husband, than me). And, of course, the Green Bay Packers (I mean, Wisconsin) and Milwaukee Brewers.

Elizabeth Perron - Harry Potter! I grew up with the books and re-read them each year.

  • @Elizabeth Perron - Grew up a big fan of San Diego sports teams (Padres, Chargers), and Lee Child novels (Jack Reacher series). Have grown into a big fan of Japanese and Swiss automatic timepieces.

  • @Austen Brown My daughter was young enough to enjoy being read to when I bought the first couple of books in the Harry Potter series. So, our Friday evenings, after dinner, were spent with me reading the books out loud to her and my husband (I got him to fold wash while listening). We continued through the entire set that way…

@Elizabeth Perron I'm a big fan of Lord of the Rings and Star Trek (original series).

  • @Elizabeth Perron The Dark is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper- this year the BBC world service is doing a 12-part audio dramatization of the first book which is really good! For several years I would read the whole series through.

  • @Elizabeth Perron - I am a Star Trek fan and Doctor Who. I discovered my Samsung TV has a channel for Classic Dr. Who. I passed along my passion for the original Star Wars to my oldest son. I haven't heard of Michael Franti before today. I enjoyed listening to his music. You would think, since we are in the same age group, that I would have heard of him.

In the past couple years, I've developed into a stationery fan, particularly fountain pens and pencils. Some of my favorite ‘cils are Blackwing and Uni's Kuru Toga mechanicals.

Connecting to analog writing instruments is kind of soothing when you live in a mostly digital world.

  • @Bobby Steurer

I had a boss who collected fountain pens and different color inks. He signed acknowledgment letters in a color that closely matched corporate colors. Now I wish I remembered what the brand was.

  • @Elizabeth Perron, like Barbara and La Donna, I grew up a Star Trek and Dr. Who fan. I also love Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Terry Goodkind, Robert Jordan, and Jeeves. (Yeah, I know that last one is out of genre!)

Media aside, I love that you included astronomy and ballet in your list of passions. I also love astronomy and biology. I love getting into deep discussions about fractals and reading quantum physics articles on Quanta Magazine. I think that a love for science fiction and a love for real science just go hand in hand!

  • Thank you all for sharing your fandoms, points are being awarded!

So many new things for me to learn about - Quanta Magazine, finding my favorite pen and signature colors, Who is this Dr. Who many of you love?…The Dark is Rising series, and timepieces, oh my!

And things we have in common - Harry Potter, Jack Reacher and Lord of the Rings?.

@Barbara Kunkel so glad you like Michael Franti. He's not world famous but he has a loyal fanbase. We are called Soulrockers….Find us on social media!

    Fan on!

I LOVE Star Trek and Star Wars (though I think I love Trek a smidgen more). In fact, I am wearing my “Wreath of Khan” Christmas jumper at work today :D

  • @Elizabeth Perron I'm a Harry Potter and Star Wars fan. My greatest fandom is tennis. I have been a tennis fan my whole life. I play every week and sometimes travel to watch tournaments. ?

@Elizabeth Perron, this may seem like an odd answer Since I've begun writing and publishing flash fiction last year, I am part of a chat group of other writers from throughout the world. They too carry on super busy work and home lives, yet find time to write touching stories. These friends have earned that place. ?

    @Elizabeth Perron
While I do love me some Star Wars and other Sci-Fi nerdy stuff, a lesser known fandom that I participate in is Nancy Drew! I've been a big fan of hers since I was a kid. I also really enjoy other teen sleuth books such as Trixie Belden, Cherry Ames, Judy Bolton, The Dana Girls, Vickie Barr, Beverly Gray, and others.

There are even conventions to attend for Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden fans! I've never been but would love to attend.

  • @Carlene Johnson
Nancy Drew!! I had the whole book collection as a girl. Since I didn't have girls, I passed my book collection to my niece. Now I wish I had them for my grandchildren. Oh, that brings back my love of a good mystery novel. I didn't even know there were conventions for Nancy Drew. Thank you for taking me back to my childhood.
