2023 BBCon Proposal to my boss

Heather MacKenzie

Hi there, anyone have an idea of what past in-person BBCon conference registration costs have been to attend? I've only been to one before, and it was so long ago I have forgotten. I'm putting together a budget proposal to my boss, and it would be great to at least have a range for the proposal. Thank you in advance for helping me out! (edited after the first couple responses were broader than I was aiming for.)

@Heather MacKenzie Obviously travel expenses will vary, but my last bbcon in 2014 (I thought I had been to one since, but obviously not) cost about $2000 after everything was paid for. That includes all my travel (airfare, transportation to the hotel and venue, as well as parking at the airport), registration, lodging, and daily per diem.

Just for reference, I traveled from Savannah GA to Nashville TN, so it wasn't a cross country flight.

@Heather MacKenzie I've been to many of these in person and at various locations. I would say the average has been about $2,000, give or take a few hundred. That includes everything from registration to transportation, flights, hotels, and meals.

Heather MacKenzie

@Shirley Dempsey and what was the BBCon cost itself within that $2,000?

@Heather MacKenzie The last time I attended in person was 2107 and it was $850. Wouldn't be surprised if it's $1,000 or more this year. ?

Marie Stark

@Heather MacKenzie In 2019 it was $950 just for the conference.

Having just had a look at the cost of flights from the UK and hotel accommodation, I'm wondering if UK BBcon will be back

@Heather MacKenzie it appears bbcon is in Denver in October this year. Depending where you are traveling from, the cost of hotels (typically the conference is at the Gaylord) and the general price of food and transportation when arriving to Denver.

@Heather MacKenzie Hi! Thanks for posting. I sent this up to the team and got this in response. We are really excited to see this conversation happening as we get ready for bbcon 2023 in person again!

“As part of open registration for bbcon 2023, a justification letter template will be available to share with your manager or leadership team. The letter provides an overview of bbcon, a summary of what you can expect to learn at the conference, and an opportunity to include estimate costs associated with your travel and attending the conference. This will be available on bbconference.com following the launch of open registration in the coming months!”

Marie Stark

@Crystal Bruce For planning it would really help to know the dates.

Crystal Bruce

@Marie Stark of course! Oct 22-24th! They are also on bbconference.com ❤️

Marie Stark

@Crystal Bruce Thank you. Is it really going to start on Sunday?

Crystal Bruce

@Heather MacKenzie Hi! Just an update, the FAQ section (including pricing for bbcon 2023) will be coming in the next couple of weeks, it will be posted on bbconference.com. Thanks!

If you are still trying to put together a proposal on this @Heather MacKenzie, I'd consider possibly submitting a proposal for a session. Having a session at bbcon will allow you to at least have your registration paid for. It also makes it easier to have the budget to go, if you only have to worry about travel expenses and food. As a green ninja, I'm sure your expertise would be very welcome.

@Dariel Dixon While I like your idea, and thanks for suggesting it, I have a crippling fear of speaking in public. Thanks for thinking I could do it!

Heather MacKenzie

@Crystal Bruce any chance the justification letter template could be available before registration opens? People need to start convincing bosses now, not then.

Crystal Bruce

@Heather MacKenzie Hi! Team tells me it will be available on May 23rd on bbconference.com.

Heather MacKenzie

@Crystal Bruce Bummer we have to wait, but thanks for the info!

Heather MacKenzie

@Crystal Bruce The link to that document takes us back to the pricing page. There is no letter available.

@Heather MacKenzie you can access the hotels available to estimate lodging pricing; I went to an airline site to estimate travel cost.
