I was interested to learn that you have so many great affinity groups. We in the religious sector are told that there is an entire vertical to religious/church giving because it represents a huge untapped sector of the market. There is a lot about a great deal of things, and little about religion.0

I didn't realize that Blackbaud gives 3% of their pretax profits to causes that their employees have personal interests in...I think this is great! I love that this report went one step further and actually featured the employees those employees making a difference.0

I have been a career-long user of Blackbaud products. I am a huge fan of Blackbaud. However, I am now at a small community foundation that needs to explore options as our current product, FIMS, does not meet our full needs. This is the first time I am not sure if BB is the right fit for our foundation. The cost is the biggest barrier based upon our assets and grant fund. So I want to share my story to shed light on what corporate social responsibility looks like when you are a customer caught in a contract that you may or may not renew.
The entire staff, including me, started in May of this year. I quickly assessed that FIMS is not getting us the information we need nor able to capture the information we need. I started exploring database options for the future, including RENXT with Financial Edge and other modules. The cost of conversion and on-going maintenance far exceeds what our budget can support. However, I just learned our contract for FIMS expires at the end of December and the ONLY option is to sign on for another 12 months. I asked my sales person if we could sign a six-month contract as we explore all our options. I was told BB only offers 12-month contracts, however we would have no issues if convert to another BB product. So we are stuck.
I am not sure where corporate social responsibility fits in when a small organization is forced to stay with a product that does not meet its needs, especially when BB's states it started with a simple idea, "Organizations and people striving to make a tangible impact in their communities deserve the right tools to help them work faster, more efficiently, and at greater scale." What happens when BB turns out not to have the right tool? Well, based upon Mike Gioviani's statement, "I’m proud of both the “what” and the “how” at Blackbaud," I would think the "how" would be acknowledging that their products might not meet the needs of every nonprofit in the market, and provide an exit strategy that doesn't force an organization to throw money down the drain on a contract for a product that does not meet its needs thus redirecting funds that could be granted out to the greater good.
Long comment? Yes, but CSR is more than just what you do outwardly, but how you react when a customer may no longer be the right fit for your product.
