ABOUT THE MUSEUM
Founded in 1931 by Dr. James Church, the Latimer Art Club, and Charles Cutts, the Nevada Museum of Art is the state’s only art museum accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) and a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD), grounded in a vision that connects art, science, and environmental stewardship. The Museum is home to the Institute for Art + Environment, an internationally recognized research center exploring creative relationships between people and place with respect for Indigenous communities of the Great Basin, and its permanent collection spans four thematic areas that advance interdisciplinary inquiry. Located at the intersection of the Sierra Nevada and Great Basin, the building is designed by architect Will Bruder and inspired by the Black Rock Desert. In 2025, the Museum completed a $60M capital and endowment campaign and opened its 50,000 sq.ft. Charles and Stacie Mathewson Education + Research Center, further strengthening its role as a hub for learning, scholarship, and community engagement.
