Virtual Fundraising Ideas

Published
If you are looking for fun, creative and engaging ways to connect with your supporters while maintaining social distancing, a virtual event may be just the (digital) ticket! We have rounded up a few ideas, based on what your contemporaries are doing on Blackbaud Peer-to-Peer Fundraising™, powered by JustGiving™.

Peer-to-Peer Fundraising

Empower your supporters to create personal fundraising pages in response to your call to action. With so many people staying home for birthdays, postponing weddings or feeling compelled to contribute to the community without risking in-person volunteer activities, a personal fundraising page is a great option.

You can either share your organization’s landing page or campaign link to encourage fundraisers to sign up.

Crowdfund your Response

You may have a specific fund, appeal, or project that you want to feature. You can build a campaign with a customized URL, driving traffic to support the need.

Luncheons, Galas, Breakfasts, or Events

In college, I interned for a nonprofit and was on the Gala planning committee. That work is not for the faint of heart! I wish it was as simple as flipping a switch, to convert these beautiful, in-person, sit-around-a-table and walk away with a huge portion of your annual budget funded, events into an exclusively digital experience. We are seeing some organizations quickly pivot to an online occasion and pick up good traction.

Virtual Fitness Event

Now, with the Strava integration, your personal fundraisers can track their miles. Perhaps you had a 5k planned for the Spring that has now been cancelled or postponed. You can still honor the original date and ask your supporters to complete the distance in their neighborhood, hooking up Strava to their personal fundraising page and displaying the route mapped out. Bonus points if you host a Livestreamed celebration afterwards!

With the Strava Fitness Integration, walking, cycling, running, swimming, and elliptical training are included. You can even use your Peloton bike! Fundraisers can learn more here.

You can also host a virtual walk without incorporating fitness. Leverage the Teams structure to connect friends and family in the virtual experience.

Host a Netflix Party

Netflix Party is a new way to watch Netflix with your friends online. Netflix Party synchronizes video playback and adds group chat to your favorite Netflix shows. This is a great option if you can choose a movie in-line with your mission, asking for $10 donations to as a virtual movie ticket cost. Maybe your organization preserves natural land or parks and can watch a documentary together. If you are a zoo, you can try one of the many animated animal movies. The possibilities are endless!

By creating a Watch Party campaign on Blackbaud Peer-to-Peer Fundraising™, powered by JustGiving™, you can prompt supporters to fundraise or donate. Just remember to pop the link to your campaign in the Netflix chat window throughout the movie, generating donations.

Virtual Social Events for Personal Fundraising

Over the past few weeks, we have seen communities rally together to combat isolation and find new and innovative ways to adapt to their new everyday life. Here are some of the creative ideas individuals are using to raise money for their favorite nonprofits. Consider promoting these options to your supporters to drive connection.

 Virtual Pub Quiz
Instead of meeting down at the local bar for in-person trivia, use an app like HouseParty or Zoom to be able connect to those around you and setup a JustGiving page to collect donations instead of entry fees!

Livestream comedy night
Don’t let a lock-down spoil your fun – livestream your stand up with the likes of Facebook Live or YouTube/Twitch and ask people for donations instead of purchasing tickets. And this isn’t limited to comedians – if you’re a musician, singer, poet (or anything for that matter) you can livestream it in exchange for donations.

Sell your skills!
With classrooms shut, why not use your skills to raise money for good? You can teach guitar, English or even a HIIT or yoga workouts via livestream and ask for donations to a charity of your choice. Facebook Live is perfect for this type of activity.

FIFA tournament/Game night
Using platforms such as Twitch and Mixer – you no longer have to be in the same room to play FIFA with your friends. Setting up a tournament easy using Battlefy or Google Sheets and livestreaming your game for donations is made easier with our guide to get started with Gaming and how to Livestream through these platforms.
