Industry Codes

Hey folks,


We are talking about adding more official Industry codes to our system (Using Blackbaud CRM). 


I have spoken to quite a few of our end-users, the goal here being adding an industry to a Constituent and/or an Organization so that our Development and Alumni Relations teams can match with them better at events and for appeals. 


We have floated the idea of using the NAICS codes, which makes sense, but there are hundreds of codes beyond the 20 pretty generic high level ones (Manufacturing, Education, etc) . I think the generic codes would be enough of a snapshot, especially at an organization level, but I wanted to know what other folks are doing.


The other question that was raised was if someone's Organization level code differs from their job within the Organization. Say, we take one of out IT people, She works for the University, so her code would be Education, but her actual job would likely fall into an Information, or Other category. Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this, and what the solution was.
