Attendance by class (section)?

I can POST a student's attendance for an entire day, but I don't see a way to say something like “John was tardy for ECON123” or “Mary was absent from ENG123 (but marked present for the rest of the day)”.

Are there fine grained controls I'm missing? or is class attendance surmised from the day/time combo in attendance? If I POST multiple entries for the same day for the same student - but different time ranges and excuses - will the last entry overwrite the previous entries?

Or am I restricted to writing one attendance entry per student per day with the API? (but able to read multiple entries per day using GET)
