Gift Aid Declaration UK
Hi
Does anyone have information on the correct way to add Gift Aid declarations.
We have been directed to the ‘NXT Data Integration’ api which has a ‘Create a tax declaration’ endpoint.
Currently we can succesfully add the Gift Aid Declaration however we do not know how to update it i.e how do we change the declaration to a ‘No’?
There is a ‘Edit a tax declaration’ Patch. I assume this is what we need. But how how do you check incase there is no previous declaration!
There is no clear documentation on how to do this the correct way. So am reaching out here.?

@Qamar Ramzan
Are you trying to set the constituent_pays_tax property to no?Why not just set to no when you create it?
Also, when you call the POST API to create the tax declaration record, the returned response gives you an “id” of the created record, which you can later use to PATCH (edit) the tax declaration record. (or delete).

Hi Alex
There will be a lot of our existing constituents who have already made declarations with ‘Yes’ for constituent_pays_tax.So if they make a another donation and want to declare ‘No’ on constituent_pays_tax then we would like to know the correct way of doing that.
Just declaring ‘No" using ’Create a tax declaration' on someone who already previously declared ‘Yes’ does not work.
I assume we need to use the ‘Edit a tax declaration’ endpoint but whats the correct process

@Qamar Ramzan You can use the Get tax declarations list for a constituent to first get a list of all tax declarations on the constituent. Then use the Declaration ID returned from that list in the Edit a tax declaration endpoint to update the declaration.

Sorry, Just to be clear on how this works.
Once a New Constituent has made their first tax declaration, is the correct way to update the previous tax declaration rather than create a new one each time they make a change e.g.
- On Monday a new constituent Joe blogs donates £5, Declares Yes to tax declaration (We create a Tax declaration)
- On Wednesday Joe Blogs donates £10, Declares No to tax declaration
In the above senario do we update the previous declaration
Or just create a new one. If we create a new one do we need to update the old one with an end date?

Ok so after some rounds with BB support I think I understand the logic behind the process. Once i have it working I will post here some notes for anyone else who may need it

Hi Qamar,Is this data from a donation page? If so I wouldn't normally add a NO GAD. I would potentially add an end date to the existing GAD, but that would depend on how the question is worded.
for example: if the question has a definitive yes/ no, then If no is answered I would update the current GAD to have an end date. (NOTE: Do not change the status on any existing GADs).
If answer is more of a ‘no response’, how I manage that might be slightly different. I still wouldn't add a NO GAD however.
NOTE: I would not recommend deleting any GAD's.

Hi Holly
Interesting! I was advised to delete GAD's in the following senario by BB support.Imagine somebody making 3 donations on separate times in the same day.
You will not be able to update those previous declarations because the tax declaration End date cannot fall on or before the specified Start date. Which will be the case here.
So i was told they should be deleted but chances of that happening are slim.

This is the question being asked- Yes, I confirm I'm a UK taxpayer, and I'd like the charity to claim Gift Aid on my behalf.
- No, I'm not a UK taxpayer, or I do not wish for the charity to claim Gift Aid on my behalf. I understand this declaration will apply to this gift and all future gifts until I notify the charity of a change.

ah ok, same day transactions are slightly different. GAD's can't start and end on the same date. So GAD made today could only end tomorrow.Let me have a think, my initial thoughts were concerned for older GADs. For example if GAD had been valid for several donations prior and they had been claimed, if you deleted the corresponding GAD this would create an R68 reversal when GA eligibility is updated (it would look like you owe HMRC money back when you don't), or if not claimed would change them to not eligible. AND generally for auditing they shouldn't be deleted anyway.
However same day is a bit different, could you have conflicting GA status on donations in a single day? Ie, they say yes to donation 1 and no to donation 2 on the same day? if so you may need to use some different logic using qualification method rules.

In the above question, is the GA question for the donation only, or are you asking for donations going forward, and or going back 4 years?

Not sure if I'm over thinking it though!
