Mystery Balance appearing

Has anyone had a mystery balance appear in the last couple of weeks? I can't pinpoint the exact date but on 2/15/24 we had a balance in one of our GL cash accounts of $13k (as born out in our bank reconciliation). A few days ago I went in to reconcile February and now the balance in the GL cash account is $44k (no activity has happened). I traced this balance back to a beginning balance in FY2007 of the amount of the discrepancy. The ending balance in FY2006 is zero and now, all of a sudden, the beginning balance of that same account in FY2007 is $31k. So far BB has not been able to help or diagnose. Just wondering if anyone else has had any strange things happening? Needless to say, those periods and years are closed and have been. So frustrating!

I too am interested to hear what Blackbaud has to say about this. Mystery issues with Trial Balance and GL balances that have happened recently need explanation. I'm still waiting to hear “verbage” from them surrounding the GL issue regarding voided payments getting doubled in the GL but not the TB…⏱

@Robin Arwood first I'd review this blog. It covers the most common causes , what this type of out of balance is. It may help troubleshoot it. If that doesn't work you can always make a GL report to go line by line on the cash account to look for the difference. KB here has steps.

@Kevin Brazell Thank you for responding. I don't think anyone is understanding what the issue is. The balance appeared overnight and in a fiscal year 17 years ago.

At face value, this sounds like another system glitch that Blackbaud will need to investigate and repair in the background. I'm hoping that nobody else is experiencing this issue, but if it's a system glitch, we'll start to see more complaints in the forum with similar issues from other users.

Also if it's a system glitch, I would expect Blackbaud to have a more comprehensive response and communication to all of us, their customers, warning us of the issue and reassuring that they are working on a solution rather than trying to keep it hidden and pretend like it's not affecting everyone like last time.

We haven't noticed any issue with our balances yet, but also, we don't reconcile within Blackbaud's system. I'm presuming based on your original question that the issue began when a bank reconciliation was processed.

@Christopher HaferYes, it was noticed when I went in to do the February reconciliation. We don't really use this bank account apparently, so the only activity is a bank fee every month. Last month there was a balance of $13k and this month the balance is $44k with no activity. Going back I found the discrepancy between fiscal years 2006 and 2007. That discrepancy was not there last month…that is the strange thing. I just want someone to remote in and dig around because I don't think they understand what I am telling them. @Robin Arwood, did you find a solution/explanation? Today, I did my April bank reconciliation, and both the bank accounts and the register were reconciled to my statement; however, when I printed the Bank Reconciliation Report, there was an Out of Balance amount on the bank accounts (within moments!). When I went back through historical bank reconciliations, they all now have Out of Balance amounts for the bank accounts, when there were all reconciled. Is this making sense? Anyway, I believe it's the same thing you experienced.

@Angelina Burton It ended up being something to do with the optimization of the fiscal years. I can't explain it, because we had not optimized anything recently, and especially not that far back. But after the optimization was taken off, the balance went away. ?????

This is also happening for me. It seems to be one single GL liability account in one fund, but is throwing my overall reconciliation off. The balances in said account do not match when reviewing GL detail report and Trial Balance. Do yours? Is yours limited to one account or many?

@Jane Garoutte I only found one account. It was fixed after I took off the optimization for all the fiscal years. I don't know why or how, but it did.
