Thanks, Mom
I’m not a fan of writing thank-you notes. To me, they’re wasteful and rote. Instead, I text pictures of myself or child enjoying the gift, which feels more sincere and eco-friendly. My mother, on the other hand, is a staunch believer in thank-you notes. She argues the time and effort are what make them significant.
Our difference in opinion is mostly generational. My mother didn’t have the option of technology until well into adulthood whereas I did. Therefore, I find handwriting painstaking—but not so much so as watching my mother text using only her index finger.
While we don’t agree on the method, my mother and I do align on the importance of expressing gratitude. Saying “Thank you!” represents good manners and appreciation, and it also increases the likelihood of receiving again. Maybe Aunt Thelma only puts $5 in a birthday card, but it adds up, and it sure is sweet how she underlines the adjectives.
Donors also prefer different expressions of gratitude. Not all donors like to be thanked in the same way. Sometimes it’s generational, but often there are other factors involved. As a fundraiser, you need to be aware of the different expressions of gratitude and how they relate to donor demographics.
Blackbaud University’s two-part blended learning course about gratitude in fundraising will help you navigate common instances faced by fundraising professionals.
