Some Questions about the Fixed Asset Module in NXT

Hi everyone, I just got out of the training for the fixed asset module and I had a couple of complex questions:

First Question: Has anyone tried using the module for tracking CIP? From what I can see once I add an asset it's "live" and subject to depreciation. Possible solutions I had on this would be to still track CIP in Excel (not ideal) or creating an asset with the CIP class so it doesn't depreciate, and when the asset is placed in service I change the PIS date, class, and set it to depreciate. I haven't tested that method out yet so I don't know if this is feasible.

Second Question: Has anyone needed to write down the value of an asset? The instructor showed me that disposing of the asset, even partially, locks that asset so it can't be changed anymore. He suggested checking out the settings and playing around in their dummy system, but I want to see if anyone has a solution to this.

Third Question: Is the module at all helpful for implementing and tracking capital budgets? If not, how do you track these? Or is it just Excel?

Thanks all!

  • I am interested in if anyone has any insights on those questions as well.

Also, I was wondering if there is a way to do a bulk asset disposal? We started inputting our assets when we first got the module and then weren't able to finish and/or keep it up and just kept using Excel. I would love to be able to delete them all (we had them set to not posting depreciation) and start over as so many changes have been made. If not, we will have to go asset by asset to see which ones we still have on the Excel spreadsheet etc.

  • Blackbaud has a dummy system for NXT?

  • Hi, you can do bulk updates using the export/import functionality like you would anywhere else in FE. There's some unique characteristics to FE so explore training on importing before you attempt.

  • I track CIP in the Fixed Asset module. I have a separate class for CIP that does not depreciate. When the project is complete, I dispose the CIP asset and create a new asset using the appropriate class for depreciation.
