If your school is setting up Turnitin LTI 1.3 or upgrading from LTI 1.1, keep this key setup difference in mind: LTI 1.3 requires you to copy information from Core in Blackbaud Education Management and enter it in Turnitin.
Administrators who have set up Turnitin LTI 1.1 are familiar with copying information from Turnitin into Core, but they may overlook the second part of the process. For LTI 1.3, you must also copy information from Core into Turnitin before the integration setup is complete.
Tip: When setting up the integration, open Turnitin and Core in separate browser windows. This will make it easier to copy and paste information between the two systems.
Why Move to LTI 1.3?
LTI 1.3 offers several benefits over LTI 1.1, including:
- Enhanced security
- Improved grade passback
- A streamlined assignment creation experience
- Support for Turnitin's New Standard Assignment workflow
In addition, Turnitin plans to end support for LTI 1.1 on December 31, 2026, and deprecate it on December 31, 2027.
What Gets Copied?
Turnitin to Core
When creating or updating an LTI 1.3 integration, copy the following values from Turnitin and paste them into Core:
- Launch URLs (both URLs)
- Target Link URL
- Login Initial URL (Login URL in Core)
- Tool Public Key set URL (Public key set URL in Core)
Core to Turnitin
After saving the integration in Core, select the context menu next to the Turnitin learning tool and select View API Key. Copy these values from Core into Turnitin:
- Client ID
- Issuer
- Public Keyset URL (into Platform public key set URL in Turnitin)
- OAuth Token Endpoint (into Access token URL in Turnitin)
- OAuth Authorization Endpoint (into OpenID connect login endpoint in Turnitin)
Common miss: admins complete the Turnitin to Core step, then forget this one. If these values are not entered in Turnitin, the registration cannot be completed, and the integration will not work.
Do Not Skip Deployment
After registration is complete, you must deploy the integration:
- Go to Academics, Group Finder and open a class.
- Select Assignments.
- Select +Add, then Turnitin.
- Sign in with the Turnitin administrator credentials used during setup.
- Complete the authentication process.
This activates the connection and makes the integration available for teachers.
Quick Checklist
Before troubleshooting, confirm that you have:
- Copied the required URLs from Turnitin into Core
- Entered both Launch URLs
- Opened View API Key in Core
- Copied the Client ID, Issuer, and endpoint URLs into Turnitin
- Saved the registration in Turnitin
- Completed the deployment process
Final Thoughts
The key to a successful Turnitin LTI 1.3 setup is remembering that the process goes both ways. If the integration is not working as expected, verify that you completed both the Turnitin to Core and Core to Turnitin steps. In many cases, the missing piece is simply that the values generated in Core were never copied back into Turnitin.
