"Purpose" field in Proposals/Opportunities

Hello RE/NXT Community,

We would like to mark the "Purpose" field in Proposal records as not required, and in the process, I am finding I cannot do this. I have been on BB chat and am being told that it is a hard coded field.

a) In others' experiences - is it indeed hard coded?

b) If you could also share if and how you have found this field helpful, I would really appreciate it. We are in the process of configuring tables for Proposals/Opportunities, and we are finding that if we already have campaign and fund fields populated, the "purpose" appears to be extraneous/duplicative. We find ourselves just trying to come up with terms to fill it rather than having a reason for using it.

Thank you!

  • I can confirm that RE is hard-coded to require the field (yellow shading indicates that the option cannot be changed) though from a database architecture standpoint I don't understand why it would be required.

We use it to specify, beyond just the Fund, what the intent is, particularly for restricted gifts (we don't create a new fund for each restriction).

If you find the field redundant then you could create a general "!Unspecified" field entry (the ! will make it show at the top of all listings, making it easier to chose).

  • Hi Claudia,

It is hard-coded so it is required in order to save a proposal.

I would recommend keeping the number of purposes low. We have 7 now. These were the original ones we used:

    Annual Giving

    Events

    Major Gifts

    Planned Giving

    Then we added:

    Grants & Contracts

    Clinician engagement

    Corporate sponsorship

    Hope this helps.
