Building Your Email Lists

One of my clients is interested in how others are building their email lists. It doesn't appear that the NXT donation form tool offers a way to collect email addresses and communication preferences (without a donation). Or am I missing something? What tool do you use to create a form that will collect an email address...and possibly the area of interest...and then allow for the organization to upload that info directly, rather than having to do it manually? Thanks for your help!
