Soft crediting spouses for past gifts

Hi,

Does anyone know best practice for soft crediting spouses for the other spouse's past gifts. Ex: Jim has given for 10 years, his wife Sally starts giving this year and thus gets her own record. Do you recommend soft crediting Sally for all of Jim's past gifts? Any other suggestions? Thank you!

  • At my former spot, we would go back to the best known date (marriage date if known, start date of constituent if not, etc.) and definitely do the soft crediting.  There's a box that can be checked in the relationship to have RE automatically do it for you going forward.

Just in case this is also applicable - I've run into a couple times where people were both donors, and then got married.  We would not soft credit for the past, just start it as the date of the marriage and do it from then on.

Heather is correct best practice is to start if from the date they were married. It will cause confusion to add it when they weren't married. Unless they tell you differently.
