Assignments that don't count for grade but need to be listed as completed or not

Does anyone have a good way that their teachers have devised of showing assignments as completed that aren't necessarily going to be a part of the cumulative grade? I have a few teachers who would like to be able to list items as due, say, a practice test with no grade, but just have the opportunity to check it off as submitted. Right now the teachers are talking about just making the assignment worth zero points, but it would be really nice to be able to utilize that submitted button!

If the class uses the percentages calculation method, the teacher can create an Assignment type that has no weight for these assignments. It will allow assignments to work in the usual ways (appears on the Assignments calendar, can be marked as submitted, etc) without entering into the grade calculation. The Assignment type can be named something to indicate its status (Practice Assignment or Ungraded Assignment, etc).
  • Unchecking the box "Add to Cum Grade" within the assignment settings would serve a similar purpose. These assignments would behave as usual in the gradebook and on the assignments list/calendar without that box checked. While max points is a required field, it can be any value and just be added in bulk to all students or left blank.
  • Thanks so much! I shared with the teachers and they're thinking this will work!
  • Thanks for this Brian!
  • This is what my team does. We have two categories. One that is weighted at 0% and the other is 80% (Final exam is 20%). The 0% category is for daily class work. It can still be graded for feedback purposes but does not impact the grade overall.
