Workflows for Donor Onboarding/Welcome Series

Hello everyone!


A colleague and I are trying to set up a welcome series for our new donors using Workflow Designer. We have planned a number of workflows depending on where the donor is in the onboarding journey.

When someone gives their first gift, a first email is sent to them, and an action of "Onboarding Email 1" is added to their record.


The issue is when we get to the second and third emails. We would like to have the second email sent to those who have the action of "Onboarding Email 1" added to their record and have not yet given a second gift. The same would happen for the third email, with those who have "Onboarding Email 1" and "Onboarding Email 2" actions but have not yet given a second gift. These lists can be pulled as an Action List, but Workflow Designer seems to only be able to be started with a Constituent List.


Has anyone planned or implemented something similar and found a workaround for this?

We tried to do the same thing, the problem is that workflow conditions are very very limited at the moment.

I have not found a way to do this within the workflow.


The first email - that's easy. but the second based on the condition of email 1 - that's couldn't be setup.


We also wanted to set up other criteria and conditions for the workflow to kick in, and couldn't due to its limitations


My only suggestion is to set up a dynamic list based on your criteria, which may work.


I am curious if you find a work around.

My two cents...I would just create a series of emails and follow up actions by gift officers...don't have the additional emails be based on whether or not they gave a second gift. The first email could be a welcome, the second could tell more about a program, the third could tell about how to get involved. Each should have a call to action--for a donation or to get involved.

@Rebekah Craig sadly, I do not have an answer for you, but rather a question… I am about to start setting up the very first welcome action, whether email or postal, via workflows.
